Position Summary

SW 405 – Social Work with Indigenous Peoples
This course investigates theory and practices for social workers to support Indigenous individuals, families and communities in a variety of settings. The course explores the history of oppression experienced by Indigenous peoples by government policies. Emphasis is placed on individual self‑determination, cultural safety, Indigenous self‑governance and societal decolonization. Prerequisite: INDG 200 level or higher.

The semester class period is from May 4, 2026 to June 17, 2026.

Expectations for Sessional Lecturers
  • Preparing the course outline, designing relevant assignments, evaluating and grading student work, and submitting student grades by the required deadline.
  • Teaching course content that follows the course description, established learning objectives, and university academic guidelines.
  • Delivering 5 lectures throughout the semester (number of classes dependent on the delivery method).
  • Encouraging and maintaining a safe and collaborative classroom environment.
  • Providing regular support to students on course work during office hours, and as required by students.
  • Consulting with the Associate Dean (Undergraduate Programs) on academic or student‑related matters as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Pay Grade: Faculty Sessional Salary Range as per URFA Collective Agreement. Status: Term. Work Hours: Expected to teach blended delivery with remote (sync) and asynchronous components. The Sessional Lecturer will attend lectures 10‑15 minutes before each class and offer regular office hours each week. Course schedule: Thursdays 9:00 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. Remote synchronous class dates: May 7, May 14, May 28, June 11, June 18. Course Modality: TBD. Course dates & time: TBD. Duration: May–June (Spring 2026).
