Job description
Description

Are you a survey professional who thrives leading teams through complex construction challenges? We’re looking for a Survey Manager to support a major GO Rail project in Oshawa, serving as the on‑site technical lead for all survey operations. You’ll act as the project’s survey subject matter expert - guiding layout, verification, data collection, and as‑built activities from initial scouting through final documentation.

This position plays a central role in planning survey strategies, developing equipment and technology workflows, and ensuring field teams have the tools, resources, and technical support needed to deliver high‑quality work.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Lead day‑to‑day survey activities, coordinating tasks and ensuring resources are deployed effectively across the project.

  • Support recruiting, onboarding, and training of new survey team members.

  • Promote a strong field‑based safety culture and reinforce safe work practices.

  • Provide informal performance feedback, technical coaching, and daily direction to crew members.

  • Assist surveyors with field challenges, interpreting requirements to ensure accurate layout and data collection.

  • Communicate survey workload needs to field supervisors and project teams, ensuring appropriate resourcing and support.

  • Offer insights that help supervisors plan staffing and resource allocation for upcoming scopes of work.

  • Coordinate daily use, set‑up, and basic calibration of survey equipment.

  • Monitor and maintain all project survey tools including total stations, GPS/RTK units, UAVs, and machine control components. Coach the team on equipment handling and troubleshooting.

  • Work with equipment and fleet teams to support GPS machine control systems and UAV operations.

  • Identify opportunities for equipment upgrades, workflow improvements, and technology enhancements to increase accuracy and efficiency.

  • Lead execution of core survey tasks: control setup, topo surveys, layout, as‑builts, and other required data capture.

  • Ensure survey activities align with project requirements, permanent and temporary design integration, and construction methods.

  • Contribute to continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to refine survey methods and enhance data quality.

Qualifications
  • 6+ years of survey experience with at least 1‑2 years in a leadership role.

  • Technological diploma in Geomatics, Civil Engineering Technology, or a related engineering field; a bachelor’s degree in engineering is an asset.

  • Advanced Operations Drone Pilot Certificate (Transport Canada).

  • Extensive experience with RTK, GPS, and Total Station systems. Strong proficiency in RTK/PPK data processing workflows.

  • Project experience working on rail transit in live corridors, highways, bridges, roads, grading and other infrastructure projects.

  • Experience working on infrastructure projects for a General Contractor or Subcontractor in Canada.

  • Proficiency in UAV photogrammetry and LiDAR mission planning and execution.

  • Experience with machine control systems (Topcon experience considered an asset).

  • Experience with Autodesk Civil 3D for modelling, drafting, and data visualization.

  • Strong communication, leadership, and problem‑solving skills with a focus on accuracy and safety.

Working Conditions
  • Site based position in Oshawa, Ontario.
