Job summary

A healthcare facility in Hamilton is seeking an Environmental Services Supervisor to lead day-to-day operations in Housekeeping and related services. The ideal candidate will have a community college diploma and supervisory experience, ensuring high standards of hygiene and patient care. Position Description

Position Summary

The Environmental Services Supervisor provides leadership and supervision of the activities within the Environmental Services Department. Supporting the frontline Environmental staff in the day-to-day issues and operations related to the delivery including but not limited to; Housekeeping, Laundry and Linen, Waste, Recycling, Patient Transportation within the Hospital community. Ensuring that the services provided by the department are coordinated in partnership with the Hospital Programs.

Qualifications
  • Community College Diploma in a related discipline
  • Environmental Services Management/Supervisors certificate or clinical housekeeping management experience preferably in a hospital environment.
  • Three years of recent supervisory experience
  • Ability to apply Hospital Policies and Procedures, WHMIS & CUPE Collective Agreement on a regular basis
  • Comprehensive knowledge of systems and equipment used to provide services
  • Able to identify and assess the learning needs of staff
  • Demonstrated teaching and coaching skills
  • Effective presentation and writing skills
  • Effective knowledge computer skills and programs (Excel, Word and Outlook)
  • Evidence of commitment to continuous education
  • Demonstrated excellence in communication, team building and the ability to initiate and model positive change
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise numerous and diverse activities, organizing and prioritizing appropriately to meet clinical units needs and expectations
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze, problem solve, make recommendations for change, implement and evaluate
  • Certification in Workplace Hazardous Material Information Systems (WHMIS), ability to maintain records of training dates for annual review
Responsibilities
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze, problem solve, make recommendations for change, implement and evaluate
  • Supervises the day to day operations to ensure timely, accurate, cost effective provision of service for the specific hospital units by:
  • Reviewing and revising schedules, workload, rotations and staffing complement as required to meet the demands of the clinical units and maintain compliance with the Collective Agreement(s)
  • Ensuring adequate staffing of the units by proper management of human resources for relief, vacation, illness, etc
  • Advising and directing staff
  • Enforcing hospital and departmental policies and procedures
  • Ensuring application of quality standards (i.e. cleaning and frequency standards)
  • Participating in the recruitment of front line staff developing staff orientation and training packages
  • Conducting in-service education and training programs for Environmental Services staff
  • Facilitating the efficient operation through development, maintenance, monitoring and evaluation of processes in the area
  • Communicating with peers at the site and across the sites in a timely and effective manner
  • Working with Occupational Health to ensure employee transitional work carrying out and participating in the disciplinary process for Environmental Services staff
  • Demonstrating and facilitating the development of staff behaviors which are consistent with the mission and vision of both the hospital and the department
  • Fostering an environment which supports and facilitates educational endeavors and the needs of staff
  • Promoting effective and ongoing communications with the Clinical areas, other Programs and Services
  • Monitors quality audit tool conducts, monitors and reports on EVS Quality management cleaning audits tools
  • Monitors and ensures clinical areas cleaning needs are met to the standards/regulations set Infection Control, Public Health Department and the Hospital.
  • Operational knowledge of safe practices and good working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Maintaining and improving methods and procedures within the area
  • Liases with Clinical management group to ensure EVS standards and Infection Control standards are met through out the hospital
  • Working knowledge of Provincial Infectious Disease Advisory Committee (PIDAC) documentation
  • Working knowledge of Hospital Emergency Preparedness Codes (both corporate and departmental)
  • Participation on (JOHSC) Joint occupational Health and Safety committees
  • Working knowledge of Ministry C4 guidelines for Bio Medical waste (Collection, storage and transport)
