Summer Conservation Field Assistant
Location: 11821 123 Street NW Edmonton, Alberta

Position Status: Two (2) Full Time (40 hrs per week), Temporary (May-August)
The Otipemisiwak Métis Government is recruiting for two (2) full-time, temporary Summer Conservation Field Assistants. These are summer term positions with an end date of August 28, 2026. Reporting to the Conservation Manager, the successful candidates will be responsible for assisting with conservation site monitoring, data collection, community education and land stewardship work; activities including, but not limited to, invasive species management, habitat assessments, plant/wildlife surveys, and community events. The successful candidates will have excellent communication skills and will be required to both take direction and work intuitively to support the completion of the department’s goals and objectives in a professionally and culturally appropriate manner.
Key Responsibilities
- Support land stewardship activities, including invasive species management, native plant seed collection, and property maintenance.
- Support plant and wildlife monitoring activities such as engaging in habitat assessments and remote camera, pollinator netting, and bioacoustics surveys.
- Support remote and field property assessments to identify lands for the potential establishment of new conservation areas.
- Support the planning and implementation of community engagements and events, in person or online.
- Support relationships with external agencies, including but not limited to government bodies, private sector, and members of the public.
- Assist with data collection, entry, and analysis.
- Assist with environment and climate initiatives, including grant applications, delivery of projects, and reporting.
- Present a positive and professional image of the organization when interacting with employees, citizens, visitors, and other external stakeholders.
- Assist with administration of Otipemisiwak Métis Government provincial events & programs.
- Other duties as required or assigned.
Skills & Competencies
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including professional email etiquette and strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships.
- Strong planning and organizational skills, with an ability to prioritize daily tasks and long-term objectives.
- Proficient computer skills with experience using Microsoft Office applications, Adobe, and Google Workspace.
- Flexible and adaptable to work in a diverse and fast paced environment.
- Ability to work outside in various weather conditions.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team, and willingness to learn new skills.
- Ability to work with and convey messages to different audiences.
- Ability to produce professional reports, documents, and presentations.
- Political and cultural sensitivity.
- Knowledge of Métis history, culture, and issues affecting Métis people. An in-depth understanding of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government and Métis culture, people, and values is an asset.
Qualifications
- Obtained or pursuing a post-secondary education in Environmental Sciences, Conservation Science, Resource Management, or a related field is preferred. Other relevant training and experience will be considered.
- 1-2 years related experience in a conservation role is an asset. School or volunteer experience is valid.
- Experience with identification of plants and animals, including invasive species, and habitat health assessments.
- Experience with field data collection methodologies, including the use of remote cameras.
- Experience with remote camera, pollinator, and/or bioacoustics survey activities is an asset.
- Experience interpreting conservation legislation, policies, and guidelines is an asset.
- Experience managing invasive or noxious plants is an asset.
- Experience working with Indigenous communities is an asset.
Other Requirements
- Availability to work Monday to Friday, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends, as required.
- Ability to travel throughout Alberta is a requirement.
- Reliable transportation and valid Class 5 driver’s license is required.
