Job summary

A municipality in Ontario is looking for a summer student to assist in turf maintenance at a golf course. Responsibilities include operating turf equipment, performing manual labor outdoors in all weather, and ensuring general upkeep of the grounds. Ideal candidates are secondary school graduates, enrolled in college or university, and possess strong communication and customer service skills. A valid Class 'G2' Ontario Driver's Licence is required.

Job description
POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the general supervision of the Supervisor – Golf Services, and the technical direction and guidance of the Leadhand Greenskeeper responsible for the general maintenance of the grounds.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Operates turf equipment (grass cutting), riding and push mower.
  • Operates grass trimmers (motorized), rakes and shovels.
  • Washes machinery and picks up garbage/litter.
  • Performs miscellaneous light and heavy manual labour outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Experience:

  • Must be a secondary school graduate and enrolled at a college or university; or an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Previous turf/landscaping experience (i.e. grass cutting, sod laying, trimming, etc.)

Skills & Abilities:

  • Must be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Must be highly motivated and able to work well in a team environment
  • Must be able to work with minimal supervision
  • Superior customer service skills and ability to deal with the public in a courteous and tactful manner
  • Ability to work outdoors in adverse conditions
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class “G2” Ontario Drivers Licence, or equivalent
  • Must meet the definition of a competent driver as defined by the Corporation

Assets:

  • Experience with operating mowers (riding or push, lawn tractors, etc.)
  • Experience working on a golf course
  • Knowledge and experience with the game of golf
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
  • Must be available for weekdays and weekends as required
  • Must remain a competent driver as defined by the Corporation
  • May be required to provide a successful driver’s abstract
