Job summary

A local government agency in Sarnia, Canada is looking for a Summer Student to assist in maintenance duties including tending to gardens and general upkeep of the properties. This role does not require prior experience but seeks individuals currently enrolled in a relevant educational program. Position Summary

This position will assist with light maintenance duties including but not limited to, hanging pictures, painting, putting away stock and conducting daily maintenance audits. In addition, this position will maintain the therapeutic gardens (planting and weeding of flower beds) and general outside maintenance of grounds and building.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist the maintenance team with regular maintenance of grounds and interior/exterior of the building, including gardens, parking lots, sidewalks, painting, and minor maintenance duties.
  • Assist with maintaining outdoor planting materials: i.e. annuals, perennials, trimming, etc.
  • Communicate harmoniously with residents, staff, and the general public.
  • Assist with the use of outdoor equipment (both hand tools and motorized equipment).
General
  • Incumbents must keep up-to-date on all relevant legislation, collective bargaining agreements, County Policies and Procedures, etc. ensuring that these are implemented as prescribed.
  • Incumbents must possess the physical ability to meet the duties and responsibilities of the job description and/or the requirements identified within the position's Physical Demands Analysis.

Credentials Required
Minimum Formal Education
  • Enrolment in a related Trades, Horticultural or Parks & Recreation program at a recognized University or College.
Experience
  • No experience necessary.
  • General building maintenance and grounds maintenance knowledge is considered an asset.
  • Knowledge and experience in the use of outdoor equipment (both hand tools and motorized equipment) is considered an asset.
Summer Student Requirements
  • Be between 15 and 30 years of age
  • Registered as a full-time student in the previous academic year and returning to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year
  • Canadian citizens, permanent residents or have refugee protection status under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Will not have another full-time job
