Overview

Student Advisor

Description: The Office of the Registrar & Student Services provides advising and administration related to registration, financial need, scholarships & awards, and graduation. The staff support recruitment and admissions of prospective students, experiential learning opportunities, scheduling of academic courses and exams, and faculty support, while upholding principles of equity, diversity and inclusion.

Your opportunity: Under the general direction of the Associate Registrar & Manager, Student Services, the incumbent provides academic and career advising to support student success in the Faculty of Kinesiology & Physical Education.

Responsibilities
  • Advising students on the development of their educational plans
  • Advising students on program and/or course requirements, exploring options and consequences, and considering personal circumstances
  • Advising on petitions and appeals processes, suggesting alternative actions as needed
  • Monitoring student degree progress
  • Facilitating educational workshops and seminars and developing learning outcomes to assess effectiveness
  • Advising on program and/or course eligibility requirements, procedures and deadlines
  • Staying informed on changes to policies, procedures and applicable legislated requirements
  • Providing proactive support to individuals in distress and making referrals to appropriate university services
Essential Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree or acceptable combination of equivalent experience
  • Minimum four years of university experience, preferably in student advising
  • Demonstrated experience delivering high impact advising with developmental practices, models, theories and tools
  • Experience with current research and best practices related to post-secondary student success
  • Experience advising on undergraduate academic requirements, policies, and procedures, with ability to refer to additional campus resources as needed
  • Ability to maintain sensitivity, understanding, and respect for a diverse academic environment
  • Good judgment and ability to interact tactfully, with confidentiality in adherence to FIPPA
  • Ability to respond calmly to students in distress
  • Demonstrated initiative and commitment to quality service; ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage a large workload with limited supervision
Assets (Nonessential)
  • Working knowledge of ROSI or similar Student Record System and Degree Explorer
  • Completion of at least Level 1 of U of T’s Academic Advising Training Program (AATP)

Pay and Job Details
