Strategic Communications Advisor

Overview

Reporting to the Director of Marketing and Communications, the Strategic Communications Advisor is a key member of the University Relations team. The position is located at Ayamdigut Campus (Whitehorse), is permanent, and requires 75 hours bi‑weekly. Wage: TBD. Employment Opportunity No. 25.139. Closing date: November 30th, 2025.

The role involves coordinating media relations and communications activities and providing advice, support, services, and training to a diverse client base that includes YukonU senior leadership.

Our preferred candidate is a storyteller at heart, with a blend of education and experience in delivering communications strategies, campaigns, and products, and working as part of an integrated communications and marketing team. They have a knowledge of post‑secondary institutions and a strong understanding of Yukon First Nations history and context. Expertise in research or science communication is an additional asset.

Duties
  • Develop and implement media relations and communication strategies to promote YukonU’s initiatives.
  • Write, edit, and design materials such as press releases, speeches, briefings, and public announcements.
  • Coordinate responses to media inquiries and act as a spokesperson when appropriate.
  • Advise and support senior leaders, faculty, and staff on communications and public engagement.
  • Manage internal communications, including the weekly university newsletter and website updates.
  • Collaborate with the digital strategist on social media content and campaigns.
  • Partner with funders, community organizations, and stakeholders to support joint communications.
  • Provide project management for communications initiatives and public‑facing events.
Qualifications
  • A relevant degree or diploma in communications, public relations, or a related field.
  • Experience in media relations, public affairs, or corporate communications.
  • Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills for a variety of audiences.
  • Knowledge of digital communication tools and social media best practices.
  • The ability to analyze complex information and communicate it clearly.
  • Knowledge of Yukon First Nations and demonstrated cross‑cultural awareness and sensitivity.
  • Political acuity, sound judgment, and a collaborative spirit.
