Job description

Can you see yourself assisting with the implementation, development, administration and oversight of daily security operations? Our Chalk River location is looking for a Staff Sergeant to assist in the oversight of daily operations and projects support. If you answered yes, Apply today!

What will you be doing!

  • Overseeing the annual shift schedule and daily shift rotations to ensure they align with scheduling protocol and fatigue management regulation.
  • Assisting the Manager, Security Operations to ensure minimum physical security program requirements are met in compliance with CNL and regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinating security operational project support to ensure regulatory requirements are met and mitigate impact to physical security.
  • Providing leadership and support to Security Sergeants, Corporals and Nuclear Security Officers to ensure consistent delivery of security services.
  • Maintaining oversight on personnel qualifications, certifications and accommodations of Nuclear Security Officers and Nuclear Response Force Officers.
  • Providing operational oversight and maintenance of Regulatory Tracking, Due Dates and tracking management tools in coordination with the Program Coordinator.
  • Participating in CNL’s disability management process by attending Return to Work Meetings and providing oversight of workplace accommodations and modified work.
  • Reporting personnel issues to the Manager, CRL Security Operations, and ensuring supervisors are aware of staff with restrictions or workplace accommodations.
  • Observing and evaluating various security operational and compliance activities to ensure observed actions align with approved security procedures, regulatory and licensing conditions are met.
  • Administering coaching and implementing remedial or corrective action when required.
  • Conducting self-assessments, preparing reports on proposed efficiencies or areas of improvement in security operations, and developing and managing corrective actions plans for approved changes.
  • Performing verifications that Security Change Control implementation of change is completed and verifying adherence to Security Operational Memorandums.
  • Educating staff about changes in regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Assessing the performance of and implementing development plans for Supervision, and Nuclear Security Officers.
  • Acting as the designated authority for Manager, Security Operations.
  • Maintaining working relations with CRNSOA. Participating in union meetings, complaint resolution, and grievance procedure at the request of, or in the absence of the Manager, Security Operations.
  • Coordinating and participating in CNSC regulatory inspections, performance testing exercises or technical meetings as required.
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.

What we are looking for:

  • Education
    • Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent
    • Post-secondary diploma with concentrated studies in a business or security/police related discipline or equivalent in knowledge and related experience is considered an asset.
    • Professional certifications such as PSP or CNSP is considered an asset.
  • Experience
    • 10 years of experience in a business or security/police/military related discipline with a demonstrated ability to coordinate and supervise employees performing access control and emergency response duties.
    • Work experience in the CNL formal document review and approval process or similar demonstrated experience developing and maintaining organizational security documentation is required.
    • Experience conducting workplace investigations and/or pertinent auditing experience is considered as asset.
    • Demonstrated experience in emergency response management and incident command is considered an asset.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • High moral and ethical character with excellent leadership, interpersonal and conflict management skills.
    • Ability to use critical thinking to solve complex problems.
    • Ability to comprehend and organize information, assess issues and take action to ensure safe and secure operations at the CRL site.
    • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate activities of self and others to achieve departmental and organizational objectives.
    • Ability to coordinate and implement contingency plans, as appropriate.
    • Ability to work effectively in a dynamic and changing work environment.
    • General knowledge of the Criminal Code of Canada, Provincial and Municipal Statutes and develop detailed knowledge on CNL Security Policies and the operating procedures in the position.
    • Working knowledge of Union-Management relations and Collective Agreements and develop detailed knowledge of developing working relationships with a Union in the position.
  • Security Clearance Eligibility Required
    • Level 2 Secret requires a minimum of 7 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”

Working Conditions:

  • Must be willing to remain on-duty during an emergency.
  • Must possess the physical agility necessary to perform the job functions to include bending, lifting, walking, and sitting for extended periods of time.
  • Exposure to weather related hazards as screening posts are mostly outdoors. Roadways on site may be noisy and potential exposure to high vehicle traffic areas for both commercial and non-commercial vehicles. May require sitting for extended periods of time.
  • The position requires work to be conducted in an office setting, with some activities requiring work outdoors and in any requisite safety gear (e.g. hard hat, goggles, safety shoes etc.)
