Overview

The Strait Regional (0052) invites applications from qualified candidates for the posted vacancy. In accordance with the CUPE (3100) Collective Agreement, senior qualified candidates will be given preference. As part of the public education system in Nova Scotia, the Strait Regional Centre for Education (SRCE) was established on April 1, 2018, to deliver the public school program focusing on supporting student learning, achievement, well-being and overall success. The SRCE, with the support of approximately 1,050 employees, aims to empower children and youth to embrace a changing world as responsible, contributing and successful lifelong learners. In 2024-2025, SRCE operates 20 schools with approximately 5,981 students; and approximately 375 children attend pre-primary programs at 14 school locations. Located in the northeastern part of Nova Scotia, SRCE’s jurisdiction encompasses the counties of Antigonish, Guysborough, Inverness and Richmond, an area of approximately 11,000 square kilometres with a population of 53,742 (Census 2021).

The Bus Driver falls within the CUPE Local 955 job classification. Salary and benefits information for this position can be accessed via the CUPE Local 955 Collective Agreement April 1 2024 to March 31 2026.

Work Schedule: 5 hours/day

Effective Dates: 10/06/2025 to 06/30/2026

Role: To drive a school bus on an assigned bus route in the Richmond County area (Route 222). Currently serving Potlotek to RECA & EREC.

Responsibilities:

  • Operate a school bus in accordance with all safety standards as prescribed by the laws of the Province of Nova Scotia and in accordance with Strait Regional Centre for Education policies and procedures.
  • Perform pre-trip inspections at the beginning of each work day.
  • Perform pre-trip inspections prior to extra/co-curricular trips.
  • Complete all transportation related forms as required (Hours of Work, Route & Passenger Sheets, Daily Inspection Sheets, etc.).
  • Maintain discipline on school buses and follow SRCE policies and procedures for incidents on buses.
  • Report all accidents in accordance with SRCE policy and procedure.
  • Keep inside and outside of bus clean in accordance with SRCE standards.
  • Report mechanical problems to the appropriate designate.
  • Operate the school bus in accordance with the route plan and schedule.
  • Attend all Driver In-services provided by the SRCE.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Minimum class 2B or 2C license with air brake endorsement;
  • Proven ability to deal effectively with students on the bus, gained through experience or SRCE-sponsored training program;
  • High school completion or equivalent in experience and training;
  • Four months driving experience as a professional school bus driver;
  • Current First Aid or willing to obtain prior to employment;
  • Successful completion of the SRCE-sponsored casual bus driver training program, or completion of a recognized professional driver training program.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Current Non-violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) Certification;
  • Commercial Safety College courses or related safety courses;

First Nation Descent.
