Job description

The Strait Regional Centre for Education is seeking applications to an Administrative Teaching vacancy. The Strait Regional Centre for Education is entrusted, under The Education Act of Nova Scotia, to deliver the public school program to approximately 5940 students in 20 schools throughout the counties of Antigonish, Guysborough, Inverness and Richmond. The Strait Regional Centre for Education, with the support of approximately 1166 staff members, works diligently to influence its vision of excellence in lifelong learning. Located in the northeastern part of Nova Scotia, the SRCE's jurisdiction encompasses an area of approximately 11,000 square kilometers with a population of 54,972. Principal

The Principal is the educational leader of the school and will ensure that the Public School Program and curricula are implemented in order to maximize student learning experiences.

The principal reports directly to the Director of Programs and Student Services and is responsible for the supervision of all school-based staff as well as the provision of a safe and orderly learning environment, the implementation of Centre and Provincial policies, adherence to pertinent collective agreements, staff deployment and supervision, and management of the physical plant.

The principal will promote positive student transitions as required for the students and the school.

Responsibilities
  • To ensure that the public school program and curricula are implemented and effectively delivered.
  • To create and maintain a safe, orderly, positive and effective learning environment.
  • To take all reasonable steps to secure full and regular attendance of the students enrolled in the school in accordance with policies established by the centre.
  • To complete and submit required documents as requested by the centre and/or the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development.
  • To identify the staffing needs of the school and assist with the selection of staff of the school.
  • To employ and monitor acceptable accounting procedures in the maintenance of all fiscal records.
  • To ensure that appropriate evaluation techniques are used for both students and staff.
  • To establish and maintain a system to handle organizational tasks such as student records, teacher records, attendance, purchasing, budgets, and timetables.
  • To ensure the security of the school building.
  • To interact effectively with media and promote positive public relations.
  • To implement program initiatives through appropriate professional development for staff.
  • To promote an understanding and application of respect for diversity and social justice as well as culturally responsive practices.
  • To provide the leadership necessary to establish and maintain an effective School Advisory Council.
  • To engage the school community in an ongoing process of school improvement.
  • To perform other tasks as assigned to her/him from time to time by the Director of Programs and Student Services and/or the Regional Executive Director.
Essential Requirements
  • Master of Education.
  • Minimum of five (5) years teaching experience in a public school system.
  • Relevant administrative experience at the grade level.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to lead effectively within a team environment.
  • Ability to create and maintain a climate of respect and fairness for all staff and students.
  • Ability to maintain and promote confidentiality as the norm under which the school operates.
  • The ability to use appropriate communication tools, especially current technologies.
  • Experience in educational administration.
