Overview

The Strait Regional (0052) invites applications from qualified candidates for the posted vacancy. These positions are for the 2025-2026 school year across the SRCE boundary. The Strait Regional Centre for Education (SRCE) was established on April 1, 2018, to deliver the public school program focusing on supporting student learning, achievement, well-being and overall success. The SRCE, with the support of approximately 1,050 employees, works to empower our children and youth in safe, equitable and inclusive environments. In 2023-2024, SRCE operates 20 schools with approximately 5,981 students; and approximately 375 children attend pre-primary programs at 14 school locations. Located in the northeastern part of Nova Scotia, SRCE jurisdiction encompasses Antigonish, Guysborough, Inverness and Richmond counties, an area of about 11,000 square kilometres with a population of 53,742 (Census 2021).

The Janitor falls within the CUPE Local 955 job classification. Salary for this position can be accessed by the CUPE Local 955 Collective Agreement. Effective Dates: 09/08/2025

Casual Janitor, All Locations

Responsibilities
  • Clean, on a daily or as scheduled basis, all assigned areas of the school in accordance with established practices and standards;
  • Obtain and maintain sufficient supplies on hand to carry out duties and responsibilities;
  • Report any breakdowns, accidents, damage or vandalism to the appropriate supervisor;
  • Secure all doors and windows whenever the building is vacated and activate security system if last person to vacate building;
  • Perform floor care duties, such as stripping, sealing, waxing, burnishing, etc.;
  • Perform duties in compliance with school, Operations Department, and Regional Education Office policies and procedures including occupational health, safety, work routines, WHMIS, and evacuation plans and the laws of the Province of Nova Scotia;
  • Other related duties as assigned.
Essential Qualifications
  • Good physical health to perform janitorial and cleaner duties, and the ability to lift heavy equipment (up to 50 lbs)
  • First Aid and WHMIS certification or willingness to obtain;
  • Effective interpersonal and organizational skills;
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both the written and oral form;
  • Willingness to work as part of the school support team;
  • Successful completion of Regional Centre for Education Sponsored Training Program for cleaner classification or willingness to participate in program.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Knowledge of commercial cleaning methods and procedures, general repair and groundskeeping
