Job summary

A community health service provider in Ottawa is seeking a skilled Speech Language Pathologist to provide assessment and treatment services for children within the First Words Preschool Speech and Language Program. The ideal candidate will possess a Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology, experience with preschool populations, and preferably be bilingual. The role involves collaboration with families, community outreach, and supporting communication skills development for vulnerable populations. This part-time position is a one-year contract based on 15 hours weekly.

Qualifications

Job Summary

Provides speech and language services, including assessment and treatment, to children and their caregivers from birth to school entry within the First Words Preschool Speech and Language Program of Ottawa and Renfrew County. The program aims to enhance children’s communication skills and includes health promotion activities to increase awareness of the First Words Program among the general population, support the prevention of communication difficulties, and reach vulnerable populations.

Job Specific Responsibilities
  • Performs formal or informal assessments.
  • Recheck/reassess as per program protocols.
  • Provide regular, direct (group or individual) therapy.
  • Demonstration of key aspects of treatment.
  • Follow-up with families as required to implement, review, update or alter the treatment plan.
  • Prepare treatment summaries and progress reports.
  • Prepare discharge summary and consultation with appropriate parties.
  • Initiate and follow-up transition process as required.
  • Direct the work of the Communicative Disorders Assistant
  • Participate in the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of treatment, education, and health promotion programs and services for individuals, families and the community.
  • Schedule clients.
  • Forwards appropriate post-encounter information to First Words program.
  • Participates in community outreach events.
  • SLPs in bilingual positions are expected to work in both official languages, the volume of which may fluctuate from time to time – i.e. more Francophone clients than Anglophone.
Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology.
  • Experience working with the preschool population.
  • Current CASLPO registration.
  • Bilingualism (English and French) is preferred.
  • Successful completion of Hanen’s It Takes Two to Talk and/or More Than Words trainings preferred.
