Job Summary

Ward 14 at the Great North Children’s Hospital is offering an exciting 6‑month Band 6 Sister secondment to join our Oncology Day Unit.

Interview Date & Working Pattern

Interview: Wednesday 14 January 2026.

Shifts: 11 × 9.5 hour shifts per 4‑week block.

Contract: 6‑month secondment. Part‑time on a 4‑week rotation.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and support a dedicated nursing team.
  • Coordinate complex paediatric oncology treatment plans and ensure safe, effective care.
  • Act as the key point of contact for patients, families, and the multidisciplinary team.
  • Drive quality improvement and uphold the highest standards of clinical practice.
  • Support the Senior Sister / Charge Nurse and act as a deputy when absent.
  • Provide effective leadership to both staff and patients, and act as a role model, teacher and supervisor for junior staff.
Qualifications & Education
  • Registered Nurse (appropriate branch) and current NMC registration.
  • Diploma in a health‑related subject, prepared to take degree‑level study.
  • Specialist qualification relevant to paediatric oncology or previous experience.
  • Meets Nursing and Midwifery Council standards for student supervision and assessment (formal mentorship).
  • Evidence of achievements, career development and ongoing professional development in the current post.
  • Understanding of professional accountability in a leadership role and relevant NHS policy context.
  • Adult / child safeguarding experience.
Desirable
  • Degree in a health‑related subject.
  • Relevant specialist qualification.
  • Audit or research experience.
  • Relevant clinical skills relating to the specialty (e.g., cannulation, IV drug administration, scrub skills).
  • Good IT skills.
