At the Vancouver Convention Centre, a division of BC Pavilion Corporation (PavCo), we work to create unforgettable moments, world-class experiences and stronger connections to community, industry and culture.

As British Columbia’s flagship convention centre, we host more than 500 events each year and welcomes hundreds of thousands of global attendees to premier conferences, trade shows, banquets and more.

The Senior Risk Manager oversees the Vancouver Convention Centre’s risk program, supporting the Director, Safety and Security, and collaborating with teams across Event Experience, Production & Services, Business Development, and Facilities Management. This role ensures public safety and seamless event execution while maintaining strong relationships with external stakeholders, including the Vancouver Police Department, RCMP, City of Vancouver, and Port of Vancouver.

You’re a seasoned professional with 7–10 years’ experience in complex event environments or venue operations, with a strong background in public safety, emergency response, client relations, and logistics. You bring expertise in contract management, risk assessment, and operational planning, and you thrive in fast-paced, high-stakes settings.

What You Will Do:
  • Manage and assess event risks using a tiered classification system (Low to Critical) based on factors like crowd size, VIPs, political sensitivities, alcohol service, and historical data.
  • Conduct threat monitoring, open-source intelligence (OSINT) sweeps, and partner with local public safety agencies.
  • Identify cyber risks tied to events and coordinate mitigations with IT/security.
  • Translate risk assessments into operational requirements (security staffing, EMS coverage, traffic control, etc.).
  • Develop layered controls: access zoning, credentialing, screening, perimeter hardening, protest/VIP plans, and emergency response protocols.
  • Advise on pre‑sales risk guidance and contracting to prevent under‑scoping.
  • Support facility readiness, including key control, CCTV, lighting, barricades, and compliance with safety codes.
  • Serve as subject matter expert during emergencies and participate in the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) when needed.
  • Provide leadership on high‑risk or high‑profile events and liaise with legal and insurance on risk matters.
  • Maintain industry knowledge through professional networks and ensure continuous improvement of safety and security practices.
What You Bring:
  • Proven experience in risk management, security, or public safety, preferably in large‑scale events or venues.
  • Strong analytical skills with experience in threat assessment and mitigation.
  • Excellent collaboration and stakeholder management abilities.
  • Knowledge of emergency planning, crowd management, and security protocols.
  • Ability to translate complex risk data into actionable operational plans.
  • 4‑year University Degree or equivalent.
  • Strong assets: Business Administration, Event Management, Security, Risk Management, or Venue Operations.
  • Equivalent combination of education, training, and experience is considered.
  • Solid technical knowledge: Microsoft Office, Momentus, iPads, iPhones, and cloud‑based software.
  • Deep understanding of the event industry and venue operations across multiple departments and buildings.
  • Knowledge of security operations, including CCTV, access control, and life safety systems.
  • Competence in budget development and financial control.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to problem‑solve under pressure.
