About the role

Canadian Blood Services is looking for a Regular full-time Senior Medical Laboratory Technologist to join our dynamic Testing team in Winnipeg.

TheTesting team is responsible for supporting Canadian Blood Services by performing routine testing, as well as other relevant lab duties. In this role you will perform and interpret all testing procedures in accordance with all Canadian Blood Services Operating Procedures and manufacturer’s instructions. You will also organize workflow, perform supervisory functions and assist with the coordination and delivery of the training program for the laboratory technologists, laboratory assistants.

  • Utilizing your exceptional organizational skills, you will organize and distribute workload to ensure the efficient operation of the laboratory, accession and office areas.
  • Drawing on your expertise, you provide technical, procedural and theoretical support to staff
  • Monitors workflow and ensures equitable distribution of the workload to meet expected turnaround times.
  • Drawing on your laboratory experience and under the direction of the Charge Technologist, coordinates the implementation of new projects, procedures and improvements to workflow.
  • Perform supervisory duties.
  • Coaches staff on their day-to-day activities.
  • Investigates technical and other patient related problems and keeps the Charge Technologist informed.
  • Drawing on commitment to excellence, you will ensure issues related to quality are followed up with appropriate corrective action.
  • Assist with the coordination of training and orientation programs for all departmental staff.
  • Consults with the Charge Technologist and Trainer regarding the needs for staff orientation and training.
  • Ensures training documentation is prepared and reviewed.
  • Performs or coordinates the delivery of training to staff and other Health Care Professionals.
  • Perform testing procedures.
  • Assist the Charge Technologist in the development of Work Instructions and controlled documents.
  • Order, receive and prepare reagents or reagent kits for testing.
  • Prepare laboratory equipment for routine operation.
Desired education and skills
  • Graduate of an approved Medical Laboratory Technology training program with attained certification by the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) is required.
  • Current registration with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Manitoba (CMLTM) is required.
  • Minimum of two years’ experience in a transfusion medicine laboratory or other related discipline is required.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of hospital and various laboratory policies and procedures is required.
  • Completion of the ISTP training program is required.
  • Working knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) is required.
  • Previous supervisory experience is preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, being able to manage multiple tasks and competing priorities within short time lines.
  • Ability to effectively delegate and direct the efforts of staff.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with a good command of the English language.
  • Ability to develop and maintain professional working relationships with departmental staff, management, volunteers, customers, and the general public.
  • Competency in the use of personal computers within a Windows environment using Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint and email software.
  • Recognized commitment to ongoing training and development.
  • Actively promotes the importance of team cohesiveness, pride and accomplishment in the delivery of a superior level of service.
  • Displays telephone etiquette and maintains high professional standards ensuring an internal or external client first approach is positive.
  • Demonstrates good listening skills in order to enable effective and satisfactory resolution of problems.
  • Ability to follow instructions, document work and assume responsibility for own work.

What you can expect
  • Shifts/hours - must be flexible to accommodate assigned shifts which are based on operational needs; length of shifts varies according to the event which takes place at Canadian Blood Services fixed and mobile donor centers. Shifts include days, evenings, overnights, weekends, and statutory holidays. On call is required. Will be required to work at the satellite lab at St. Boniface Hospital 1 out of every 5 weeks.
  • Physical requirements - ability to lift weight up to 10 kg (22 lbs.).
