Your opportunity

The Robert Gillespie Academic Skills Centre (RGASC) is a hub for academic skills development on the University of Toronto Mississauga campus. The mandate of the RGASC is to support and promote teaching and learning in a range of contexts across the University of Toronto Mississauga. For students, the RGASC is a resource for developing academic skills through individual appointments and group‑based initiatives that help students identify and develop the academic skills they need for success in their studies. For instructional staff and faculty, the Centre is a partner in teaching and learning activities. These activities include course and program design, implementation and assessment of a given intervention’s impact. Faculty and staff appointed to the RGASC have a range of specializations, including academic peer support, academic writing instruction, educational development, English language learning, numeracy, scientific literacy, and supplemental instruction. This diversity of experience and expertise enables the Centre to collaborate productively with partners from across the disciplines and campus, who bring with them a varied and diverse set of teaching and learning objectives.

Reporting to the Director, Robert Gillespie Academic Skills Centre (RGASC) and the Assistant Director, RGASC, the Senior Educational Developer & Team Lead promotes a scholarly and evidence‑based approach to teaching. As the Team Lead, they will direct the activities of the Educational Developers team, provide expertise, and make recommendations for projects, workflow, timelines, and deliverables. The Senior Educational Developer will work closely with senior University administrators and academic departments to foster and maintain networks that build capacity and collaboration that enhance pedagogical practices.

The individual will facilitate and lead workshops and /or community of practices, as well as meet individually with instructors to advise on strategies for developing and delivering curriculum and make recommendations on best practices related to teaching and learning. They will have a good understanding of pedagogical literature and application of teaching and learning theory. They will be able to communicate and work effectively with faculty, graduate students, support staff and university administrators. They should have a passion for supporting instructors of diverse backgrounds and must be sensitive to the professional development challenges and support needs of educators at all career stages.

Your responsibilities will include:
  • Consulting with instructors, administrators and others (e.g., graduate students, staff, partners) on the development of tailored programming needs
  • Building and strengthening relationships with stakeholders and partners of strategic importance
  • Leading the development and making recommendations for operational policies, procedures and best practices for the program and educational developer team
  • Developing and implementing components of instructional programs
  • Developing instructional design plans for use in teaching contexts involving educational technologies, including collaborating with academic departments to integrate active learning techniques, inclusive teaching practices and assessment strategies into curriculum design
  • Planning and overseeing the implementation of an evaluation framework for assigned projects, (e.g. develop instructional design plans and evaluation frameworks for use in teaching)
  • Developing resources on educational related matters for instructors and subject matter experts
  • Developing, revising and operationalizing business processes that support the strategic objectives of the unit
  • Developing and implementing instructional strategies to support learning objectives, incorporating current best practices in teaching
  • Conducting detailed analysis and evaluation to inform program planning activities
  • Advising others on the development and evaluation of course and training materials
  • Directing the activities of a group of staff‑appointed employees all performing a similar function
Essential Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree in Education or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum eight (8) years experience in educational development and/or training and development including a minimum of five (5) years experience in post‑secondary education
  • Demonstrated university‑level instruction, facilitation, curriculum development, faculty development and professional development for faculty and staff
  • Experience with program evaluation and assessment methodologies
  • Experience supporting and mentoring faculty in teaching dossier preparation
  • Knowledge of curriculum/curriculum development and able to respond to changes in the higher educational landscape, which includes proactively developing new instructional materials and workshops
  • Strong understanding of educational theory, pedagogy, and adult learning principles
  • Ability to use academic and collaborative technology tools, learning management tools and applications for academic development
  • Excellent oral and written communication, interpersonal, facilitation and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge or engagement in scholarship, teaching, and learning related to theories and practices used in educational development and their application to curriculum development processes and tools and teaching and resource development
  • Strong consultative decision‑making skills, demonstrated through approachability, supportiveness, and equitable interactions with faculty, staff, graduate students and postdoctoral scholars
  • Exceptional organizational skills, ability to successfully meet deadlines and proven project management abilities, coupled with adaptability and a commitment to building strong community relationships; capable of working independently and collaboratively within a diverse and inclusive environment
  • Must have strong computer skills, including a high degree of functionality in the use of all Microsoft Office applications
  • The incumbent must have a passion for supporting instructors of diverse backgrounds across the humanities, social sciences, science and management disciplines; sensitivity to the professional development challenges and support needs of educators at all career stages and all levels of experience
  • Must show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment
