Based out of the Electrical Division Edmonton (EDE) location, the primary function of the Buyer is to manage an assigned set of commodities to ensure the Supply Chain is properly aligned to meet our demand schedule at the total lowest cost possible.
Responsibilities
- Manage an assigned set of commodities to align the Supply Chain with demand at the lowest total cost.
- Use the Supplier Scorecard Process to improve performance; identify and implement stocking programs (such as VMI, Supplier Safety Stock and/or Consignment) where applicable to eliminate stock outs or shortages.
- Dispost Non-Conforming Material back to the supplier in a timely manner.
- Reduce the overall cost to the business by managing PPV and delivering cost savings through projects identified at both Local and Corporate levels.
- Ensure Purchase Orders are placed on time and in accordance with Powell’s Grants of Authority.
- Adjust Suppliers Delivery Schedules as required to support customer schedules and communicate the status of shortages and expedite POs as required.
- Improve the performance of the Supply Chain by developing action plans for worst-performing suppliers to improve delivery or exit them as a supplier.
- Ensure PO information is accurate to ensure efficient supplier invoicing upon receipt.
- Promptly disposition Non-Conforming Material back to suppliers to minimize schedule delays.
- Maintain Purchasing information within Oracle (Lead Times, Pricing, MOQs, etc.).
- Work with the Inventory team to disposition excess and obsolete purchased inventory.
- Adhere to Powell Safety Rules.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or Associate’s Degree (Bachelor’s Degree Preferred).
- Purchasing and Supply Chain experience (engineered to order manufacturing environment preferred).
Preferred Qualifications
- APICS Certification Preferred (CPIM / CSCP).
- Skills, Abilities & Other Requirements: Strong Negotiation Skills; Demonstrated Analytical and Root Cause determination skills; Strong oral and written communication skills; Computer Skills – ERP, Microsoft Office, Supplier Portals; High level of Customer Focus (both internal and external).
Working Conditions

- Working in front of a computer for the majority of the shift.
Physical Requirements
- Maintaining body equilibrium and agility to prevent falling when walking, standing, crouching, ascending or descending stairs.
- Bending the body at the waist, the legs at the knees, and extending arms and hands in any direction in a repetitive manner.
- Using upper extremities to apply or exert a force up to 20 lbs.
- Typing or applying pressure to an object with fingers and palm.
