About The Role

If you’re dedicated to outstanding service and want to make a difference in your community, consider joining ATCO Electric as a Safety Codes Officer. Reporting to the Supervisor, this position is responsible for applying the Alberta Safety Codes Act and auditing facilities to identify compliance issues and corrective actions. This position is also responsible for providing rulings or interpretations of applicable electrical system regulations to the company.

What You’ll Do
  • Conduct safety code audits and activities as required by ATCO Electric’s Quality Management Plan under the Safety Codes Act
  • Inspect newly constructed engineering facilities by reviewing as-built drawings on site and comparing to the engineering drawings, regulatory requirements, codes and legislated standards.
  • Identify and notify responsible managers and supervisors of regulatory violations (Safety Codes Act, Regulation, AEUC, CEC and other legislated design standards).
  • Provide recommendations for improvements to ATCO Electric Safety Codes Program based on the findings of audits, inspections and investigations.
  • Prepare reports for all facility audits.
  • Investigate safety codes issues related to constructability, operability and maintainability of new electric facilities. Investigate incidents that may be related to safety codes deficiencies.
  • Makes impartial decisions while maintaining professional relationships with internal and external colleagues.
  • Monitors electric utility regulations, codes and standards that affect ATCO Electric and advising and/or taking action on potential impacts.
  • Monitor action items and commitments.
  • Follow up with responsible managers to ensure completion of actions and commitments.
  • Escalate matters as appropriate.
  • Review new or non-standard prints to identify potential codes and standards compliance issues.
  • Present and share safety codes inspection results with various groups including engineering, operation, work method, etc.
What You’ll Bring
  • Either an Alberta Journeyman Electrician, Power System Electrician or Powerline Technician certificate and 6 years of related field experience, or Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology and 8 years of experience.
  • Safety Codes Officer certification in Electrical and Electrical Utility.
  • Subject matter expertise in Alberta Electrical Utility Safety Regulations, Codes and Standards.
  • Valid driver’s license and standard first aid certificate.
  • Self-motivated, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to work independently.
  • Good communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Proficient use of the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Field work with exposure to the elements, noise, dust and electrical hazards.
  • Travel to remote areas with overnights is required.
  • Working alone may be required.
  • On-call work may be required.
  • A variety of sitting, standing and walking.
  • Intense visual concentration is required up to and including 50% of the time.
  • May require frequent physical activities (lifting boxes, bending)
