Status: Temporary Full-Time (up to 12 months with possible extension)

HOURS OF WORK: Days, evenings, nights and weekend shifts

Position Summary

As a member of the Interprofessional Care Team, the Registered Practical Nurse provides direct nursing care to patients, in accordance with the philosophy, objectives and policies and the Standards of Nursing Practice. The Registered Practical Nurse works under the direction of and in conjunction with other regulated health care professional members of the team. The RPN participates in service and hospital-wide activities and programs that model and promote a safe and healthy patient-centred environment and that contribute to quality improvement and risk management initiatives.

Requirements
Education and Experience
  • A Registered Practical Nurse currently registered with College of Nurses
  • Successful completion of an approved Medications Administration Course consistent with the Standard of the College of Nursing of Ontario. Able to demonstrate competence in the administration of medications
  • Minimum of three years’ experience in working with people who have been diagnosed with a serious mental illness
  • Completion of the psychiatric nursing component, crisis intervention and suicide intervention courses would be considered an asset
  • Current NVCI, CPR and First Aid
  • Member of RPNAO preferred
Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrated competence in nursing practice
  • Excellent knowledge of a variety of serious mental illnesses
  • Excellent knowledge and experience working with psychotropic medications, side effects of same etc.
  • Knowledge/experience of the Recovery Model, trauma-informed and strengths-based approaches to care
  • Knowledge/experience with Psychosocial Rehabilitation Model
  • Knowledge of the mandate of mental health integrated community services
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and also function effectively as a member of a multi-disciplinary team in a fast paced environment
  • Demonstrated flexibility, creativity and ability to prioritize
  • Demonstrated ability to relate in a tactful and sensitive manner with patients, visitors, staff and volunteers
  • Good attendance and availability required
