Forensic Psychiatry Program — Registered Practical Nurse (1 position)

Job Share • Salary Range: $38.80 - $39.19 /hour

Note: This position is currently a Float assignment and is subject to change. Hours of work reflect current scheduling arrangements and may change as determined by the Employer.

The Forensic Psychiatry Program has adopted the Psychosocial Rehabilitation and Recovery Model. This philosophy emphasizes client and family involvement in decision making, client choice, and a range of services to meet treatment, rehabilitation and support needs. Work is conducted within the parameters defined by the Ontario Review Board within each patient’s Disposition order and in collaboration with the University of Western Ontario.

The Forensic Psychiatry Program is committed to education and research, with connections to the University of Western Ontario. You will work in an interdisciplinary team, providing nursing care to clients with severe and persistent mental illness.

New graduate nurses eligible to obtain temporary or general class registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario are encouraged to apply. This is an opportunity for a new graduate to expand nursing assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation skills in Forensic Psychiatry, within a supportive multidisciplinary team.

Essential Qualifications
  • Valid registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Valid CPR certificate
  • Proficiency and experience in pharmacology and medication administration
  • Experience and knowledge of the care needs of clients with severe and persistent mental illness
  • Good working knowledge of mental health legislation
  • Ability to establish positive interpersonal relationships and work effectively as part of a team
  • Ability to coordinate care with the Registered Nurse and other multidisciplinary team members; capable of functioning independently with clients with a predictable outcome
  • Demonstrated ability to apply and document the nursing process
  • Ability to relate therapeutically with clients
  • Ability to respond effectively to psychiatric and physical emergencies and/or crisis situations
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Flexibility and strong organizational skills
  • Ability to apply effective body mechanics and meet the physical demands of the position
  • Travel within the catchment area
  • Knowledge of safety culture in a health care setting in compliance with OHSA
Preferred Qualifications
  • Proficiency in French is an asset
  • Minimum of one year of experience in mental health
  • Completion of courses in psychiatric nursing

Immunization Requirements
  • Provide vaccination records or proof of immunity against measles, mumps, rubella, varicella (chicken pox), Hepatitis B, COVID-19 and influenza
  • Provide documentation of Tuberculosis skin testing
