Your Opportunity:

The Central Access and Triage (CAT) Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for providing leadership & oversight to the central referrals office. The role has many administrative components with direct patient care being limited. The RN reviews incoming patient referrals, assesses urgency, appropriateness and assists with triaging referrals to specific surgeons based on patient need. The RN acts as a liaison between the central access office and other stakeholders, such as, Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Primary Care Physicians and other referral agents to facilitate the referral process. The Triage RN assists with triaging & processing incoming/outgoing referrals for 16 Surgeons within 4 clinics (Hand, Cast, Hip & Knee, General Orthopedic), monitors both appointment work queues and surgeons wait‑times to ensure wait times to referrals are assigned appropriately. The RN conducts bi‑weekly audit reviews and provides monthly waitlist statistics to designated Physician leads and Unit Manager. This self‑directed position functions as an integral part of a multidisciplinary team, collaborating with Surgeons, RN case managers and medical office assistants (MOA’s) in delivery of care. In collaboration with the nurse clinician and nurse educator, the triage RN reviews clinic policies and procedures, updating and archiving as appropriate. The RN will monitor clinic in basket pool for messages, online RightFax for incoming documents/referral not received by the clinic to ensure items are actioned in the fax folder. The RN is required to be onsite full‑time (Monday – Friday) and help fulfill the Nurse Clinician duties whenever the clinician is absent. The RN will be expected to assist case managers, Ortho Techs and LPN’s, as needed.

Upon obtaining a full licence, the rate of pay will be adjusted to the applicable Registered Nurse rate in accordance with UNA Article 25.02(b)(i) or (ii) as applicable.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Bachelor's of Nursing Degree. Current CRNA Registration and in good standing. Current BLS‑HCP Certification. Minimum 5 years of recent Acute Care Experience (within the last 5 years). Minimum 3 years of Orthopedic Experience (within last 5 years). Minimum 1 year experience using EPIC in Ambulatory Clinic (preferably orthopedics). Minimum 1 year experience with Ambulatory Referrals Management. Demonstrated strong interpersonal and decision‑making skills with ability to problem solve. Demonstrated critical thinking & assessment skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

Previous experience Triaging Patient Referrals. Previous experience Managing Referral Work queues (1 to 5). Strong Understanding of Referrals Entry & Waitlist. Previous Case Manager or Nurse Clinician experience. Knowledge of the CPSA Guidelines. Have a broad understanding of the Hip and Knee Care Pathway and Alberta Referral Directory. Strong Telephone Assessment skills. Proficiency in using Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, SharePoint, PowerPoint).
