Job summary

A health organization located in Sault Ste. Marie is seeking a Public Health Nurse to improve community health through collaboration and various health promotion activities. The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, experience in public health, and be proficient in providing clinical services. Applicants must be registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario and demonstrate strong interpersonal and organizational skills. This role requires adaptability to work outside regular hours as necessary.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in nursing required.
  • Postgraduate education in public health nursing is an asset.
  • Must be registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Experience with health program planning and evaluation.
  • Must have a valid Ontario driver's licence.

The PHN works in collaboration with internal and external partners to improve the health and well-being of the population (i.e. children, families, youth, and adults) in our communities. The PHN and the teams use knowledge of healthy growth and development, school health, healthy behaviours, community wellness, infectious diseases, evidence informed practice and the assessment of the community to plan health promotion and prevention initiatives. Programs and services will be delivered using relevant guidelines and protocols and the PHN will work in their full scope of practice.

Activities may include home visits, school and child care visits, clinical services, population health approach, community assessment, collaboration and meaningful community engagement.

Qualifications, Experience, and Public Health Nurse Skills for this position include but not limited to:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing from a recognized university.
  • Post graduate education or certificate in public health nursing considered an asset.
  • Current certificate of registration from College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Ability to apply health promotion, disease and injury prevention, and health protection strategies.
  • Ability to facilitate planned change through the application of the Population Health Model.
  • Experience with evidence-informed program planning, development, implementation, and evaluation based on health equity and effective public health practices including public policy, community mobilization, health education, and skill building.
  • Ability to interact effectively with diverse individuals, families, groups and communities.
  • Ability to effectively work independently or as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Proficient at administering intramuscular, subcutaneous, and intradermal injections to clients of all ages in an empathetic and caring manner.
  • Ability to navigate, and promote linkages to community programs and services.
  • Ability to build effective relationships with community partners, agencies and/or regional/provincial committees.
  • Ability to use reflective practice to continually assess and improve practice.
  • Excellent interviewing, counselling and teaching/facilitating skills.
  • Ability to work in a self-directed, and highly responsive manner, to establish priorities and balance multiple projects.
  • Experience with electronic health records and electronic data systems would be an asset.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated proficiency using Microsoft office programs including Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Must be reliable and have a good attendance record.
  • Advanced oral and written proficiency in English is essential. Proficiency in both official languages, as well as knowledge of additional languages relevant to our diverse communities, will be considered an asset.
  • The ability to work outside regular business hours, including weekends and evenings, as required.
  • Requires a valid “G” Ontario Driver’s Licence and use of a reliable vehicle.
  • As a condition of hire, you are required to be fully vaccinated with a COVID-19 vaccine series, per our COVID-19 Immunization policy. Should you be the successful candidate, you will be required to comply with our COVID-19 Immunization policy that is in effect.
