Job description
Overview

Excellent opportunity for a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist to join the expanding Psychiatry department at Kelowna General Hospital. You will be part of a team of dedicated psychiatrists providing inpatient and outpatient child and youth mental health services within the hospital and the expanding local community. Subspecialty areas include eating disorders and substance use disorders. Kelowna offers a collaborative environment with opportunities for teaching, leadership development, and community engagement through programs such as Foundry.

Hospital work involves psychiatric assessment and treatment of patients up to 18 years of age, often admitted through the Emergency Department. The Adolescent Psychiatry Inpatient Unit has 8 beds and operates seven days a week, with length of stay ranging from 10 days to several weeks. The unit is supported by a Mental Health Liaison worker to assist with access to community-based programs. The Interior Health tertiary Adolescent Psychiatry Unit provides a specialized inpatient program for youth 12-17 with significant psychiatric symptoms requiring extended assessment and treatment planning. Evaluation is carried out by a multidisciplinary team and requires active participation from adolescents, families, and community mental health support services.

The role includes patient assessment and treatment, collaboration with clinicians and managers, development and maintenance of programs, policies, and procedures. You will have active staff privileges at RIH and serve as the Most Responsible Physician when patients are admitted. You will assume care for a portion of new child & youth psychiatric admissions and participate in the general on-call schedule. Community work involves supporting family physicians, pediatricians, and child & youth mental health services. A collaborative program exists to serve youth transitioning to adulthood. Teaching opportunities for medical students and residents are available as KGH is affiliated with UBC Faculty of Medicine Southern Medical Program.

Leadership development opportunities are available through Interior Health’s NAVIG8 Program, including the NAVIG8 Emerging Physician Leaders Program designed to build practical leadership knowledge, behaviors, and skills for early-career physicians.
