What can you expect in this role?
Reporting to the Property Underwriting Leader, the Property Underwriting Team Leader is responsible for the daily activities of a designated group of property underwriters. As the primary point of contact for the team, the incumbent provides directions to the team and maintains adequate staffing levels to ensure high service standards are met. The Team Leader works closely with the Underwriting Manager to plan and execute company directives and goals. The incumbent is expected to actively underwrite policies and have a solid working understanding of department practices and broker relationships.
Responsibilities
- Staff Supervision and Training (40%)
- Coordinate the team to maintain service level agreements and report results to the Underwriting Manager.
- Collaborate with other leaders and/or the Underwriting Manager to resolve resource conflicts affecting service levels or project deadlines.
- Assist in developing internal procedures and documentation related to the Property product to ensure consistent practices and adequate internal control of the department.
- Supervise direct reports and consult with the Underwriting Manager on concerns.
- Ensure staff have opportunities to participate in training events to enhance development.
- Staff Development and Evaluation (30%)
- Proactively manage individual team member performance and productivity; take corrective action when necessary.
- Coach team members to provide direction, encourage development, and assist with career progression.
- Recommend, monitor and enforce binding authority limits for staff.
- Conduct quarterly performance reviews of team members.
- Facilitate team meetings.
- Underwriting Operations (30%)
- Respond to broker inquiries, concerns or complaints on underwriting decisions as escalated by team members within binding authorities; refer to the manager as required.
- Ensure team members understand underwriting objectives and work toward common goals.
- Collaborate with Underwriters on risk selection; approve exceptions while ensuring policies are selected according to Family’s guidelines and accurately rated on the POS system.
- Assist Underwriters with referrals due to volume or complexity.
- Provide feedback to marketing and management on training and broker issues.
- Manage relationships with brokers to develop stable and profitable books of business; participate in broker reviews and special projects as required.
- Stay informed about marketplace changes and recommend product/process adjustments as needed.
- Continue professional development; attend industry events or broker visits as required.
What you bring to the role
Experience & Educational Qualifications
- Ten or more years of experience in personal insurance.
- Detailed knowledge of personal property and casualty insurance, including risk analysis of home products; knowledge of personal auto products is an asset.
- CIP or FCIP designation or post-secondary degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- General Insurance Agent Level 2 License (or willingness to obtain within the first 30 days of employment).
- Prior leadership experience is an asset.
- Strong computer skills including Office 365.
- Ability to proactively solve problems and recommend solutions.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to interpret and effectively communicate complex information.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Understand insurance practices and market trends.
- Results-driven and customer-focused.
Actual salary for the role may vary depending on work location and other factors. In addition to base pay, eligible employees may participate in incentive plans subject to performance.
