Wage: $23.85/hour to start

Position Summary
The Literacy and Basic Skills Program (Learning Alternatives Program) at the John Howard Society of Durham Region, funded by the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training, and Skills Development, assists individuals with non‑accredited skills upgrading in the competencies of the Ontario Adult Literacy Curriculum Framework (OALCF). This includes support in reading, writing, math, and digital technology.
The Pre‑Employment Training Instructor collaborates with the Employment and Training teams to develop and deliver curriculum that strengthens foundational skills, financial literacy, soft skills, digital proficiency, and sector‑specific training. The role also supports clients as they transition from Pre‑Employment to Employment Services, ensuring learners are equipped with the tools they need to succeed in the workforce.
Key Responsibilities
Service User Assessment and Support
- Utilize a variety of tools and methods to conduct initial, on‑going, and exit educational assessments to determine skills, interests, abilities and aptitudes.
- Provide support to multiple learners simultaneously, while effectively prioritizing their individual needs.
- Design and deliver individual or group learning sessions tailored to client or employer needs.
- Teach skills in digital technology, reading, writing, and numeracy (OALCF Levels 1–3).
- Foster an inclusive learning environment for clients with diverse backgrounds.
- Provide pre‑employment training for clients with complex needs.
- Facilitate workshops on pathways to education, digital technology, and labour market readiness.
- Coordinate referrals and collaborate with partner organizations to provide wrap‑around supports.
- Support employment‑related certifications, such as Smart Serve, Basic Food Safety, and computer training.
Case Management and Documentation
- Maintain detailed case notes, progress reports, and service user files.
- Use cognitive skills or counselling models to develop and implement action plans.
- Advise on educational goals and provide instruction based on the OALCF framework.
- Coordinate with Employment and Training teams to deliver integrated services.
- Track follow‑up interventions and client progress.
- Achieve quarterly and yearly targets and milestones as determined by funders.
- Efficiently manage a diverse and at times high‑volume client caseload.
Community, Administration, and Outreach
- Market JHS training programs and establish relationships with community agencies and employers.
- Identify labour market trends and opportunities for skill development.
- Maintain accurate statistical data for reporting and program evaluation.
- Represent JHS Durham at community events and meetings as needed.
- Ensure compliance with JHS standards, including referrals and record‑keeping.
Qualifications and Experience
Education & Certifications
- Post‑secondary education in Education, Social Services, or a related field.
Experience
- Experience teaching or tutoring adult learners and understanding of adult education principles.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Proven skills in facilitation, counselling, and pre‑employment support.
- Strong math, reading, writing, and digital technology skills (Excel, Word, Zoom proficiency).
- Understanding of the OALCF framework, goal paths, and competency levels.
- Experience working with diverse demographics, including youth, newcomers, and differently abled individuals.
- Case management expertise, including assessments and action planning.
- Familiarity with employment services, labour market trends, and learning disabilities.
- Exceptional organizational and time management abilities.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal).
- Knowledge of social media platforms (Facebook, X, Instagram, WordPress).
Working Conditions
- Potential exposure to infectious waste, diseases, and related conditions may occur.
- Regular interaction with the public, clients, staff, visitors, and representatives from other organizations is expected.
- Ability to engage in ongoing physical activity, including walking, standing, sitting, and lifting objects up to 25 lbs.
- Proficiency in manual dexterity required for operating desktop computers and peripherals.
- Flexibility in working hours as required to meet the demands of the position.
