Job summary

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 10 years' experience in steam or gas turbine operations and hold a relevant engineering certification. Strong leadership and planning skills, along with proficiency in MS Office, are essential. Candidates must communicate effectively in English and possess a valid driver's license.

Overview

Job Title: Plant Manager
Location: Cochrane, Ontario
Position Type: Full-time, Permanent
Start Date: As soon as possible

The Plant Manager will oversee the operations of a thermal power plant, ensuring optimal performance, regulatory compliance, and operational readiness. This role involves leadership, strategic planning, and hands-on management to maintain and improve power generation assets.

Responsibilities
  • Leadership & Staff Management: Supervise and lead plant operators, electricians, and other personnel; foster a safe, efficient, and collaborative work environment.
  • Operational Oversight: Ensure maximum operational readiness to meet dispatch instructions from the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO); oversee daily plant operations, maintenance schedules, and emergency response procedures.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Maintain compliance with all applicable health, safety, and environmental regulations; liaise with regulatory bodies such as TSSA and utilities (e.g., HONI).
  • Budgeting & Cost Control: Develop and manage budgets for operations and maintenance; monitor expenses and implement cost-saving measures without compromising safety or reliability.
  • Procurement & Vendor Management: Lead procurement activities for products and services in collaboration with staff; manage relationships with suppliers and contractors.
  • Reporting & Documentation: Prepare and submit reports on staffing, operations, and maintenance to senior management; maintain accurate records of plant performance and compliance activities.
  • Strategic Development: Participate in initiatives to extend or expand plant capacity and energy services through future Requests for Proposals (RFPs).
  • Travel: Occasional travel may be required for meetings, inspections, or training.
Candidate Profile / Qualifications

Education & Certification:
1st, 2nd, or 3rd Class Power (Operating) Engineer certification from TSSA (desirable); Diploma or certificate in business administration, electromechanics, electrotechnology, or similar (desirable).

  • Experience: Minimum 10 years in steam and/or gas turbine operations (desirable); Experience with IESO, HONI, and TSSA processes (desirable); Proven track record in human resource management.

Technical Skills:
Knowledge of thermal power generation operations and safety standards; Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and report generation.

Language Skills:
Excellent communication skills in English (written and spoken); Working knowledge of French is an asset.

Other Requirements:
Valid driver’s license.
