Work Schedule: 8:00 am – 5:00 pm; Monday – Friday with occasional evening and weekend hours required, as necessary.

Primary Purpose of Position

Screens, prepares, and processes provider medication orders under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist. Provide clerical support to the medical records and front desk areas of the clinic as required. This position receives the medication order, reviews the patient medication profile, enters required information into a data information system, prepares a prescription label, selects the appropriate drug, counts out the prescribed number of medication dosage units, and proofs for errors.

Qualifications
  • Completion of a nine-month Pharmacy Technician program or graduation from high school and one year of pharmacy-related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Journey level: Completion of a nine-month Pharmacy Technician program or graduation from high school and two years of pharmacy-related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Advanced level: Completion of a nine-month Pharmacy Technician program or graduation from high school and four years of pharmacy-related experience including one year of supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Responsibilities
  • Routine processes such as labeling and inventory maintenance
  • Process prescriptions through electronic health record and QS1 or other pharmacy software
  • Recording data and maintaining accurate patient profiles.
  • Preparing and dispensing medications.
  • Provide positive and effective customer service by listening to patients/clients and understanding and responding to identified needs.
  • Provide basic instructions to patients/clients on how to administer and/or store medication and refer patient to pharmacist for any technical or detailed information.
  • Assist with overall pharmacy inventory
  • Ability to understand, communicate, and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Working knowledge of federal and state laws, rules and guidelines regarding pharmacy services
  • Fill medication orders following established procedures
  • Prioritizes tasks and keeps current on all records and forms
  • Demonstrates basic knowledge of medical and pharmaceutical terminology and processing techniques
  • Support medical records, front desk, immunizations, medical clinic and other relevant staff
  • Assist with processing and resolving insurance claims
  • Understand and comply with quality control procedures of pharmacy, Student Health, and university
  • Prepares statistical reports
  • Assist with maintaining appropriate inventory of regular medications and/or controlled substances.
  • Embrace change with the role of a pharmacy technician in both the pharmaceutical industry and Student Health.
  • Basic knowledge of medical and pharmacy terminology
  • Basic knowledge of pharmaceutical drugs, calculations and formulas
  • Basic knowledge of chemical procedures used to compound, reconstitute and dilute drugs
  • Excellent customer service and problem resolution skills.
  • Follows medication orders and written instructions. Labels and prepares written information following established procedures.
  • Collects fees and payments
  • Makes accurate observations concerning drug qualities, quantities, and accuracy of label
  • Employee will have daily contact with pharmacist, vendors, patients, health card providers, nursing staff, and other administrative staff.
  • Employee will answer basic questions regarding medication concerns, prescriptions, insurance, pharmaceutical history, prescription refills, prescription transfers and assuring patient receives pharmaceutical counseling when required.
  • Required to maintain all necessary continuing education requirements/credits for national certification.
Departmental Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

Must be at least 18 years of age. High school graduate or GED required. Must be licensed by the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy and maintain license. Required certification by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (CPhT). Prior Retail Pharmacy Technician experience is required.
