SCHOOL: School of Adult and Alternate Education - Lindsay Site

POSITION: Continuing Education Teacher - Personal Support Worker Program

Trillium Lakelands District School Board is providing a Personal Support Worker Program. Personal Support Workers are individuals who primarily work in care facilities for the elderly. Through the Ontario Association of Adult and Continuing Education School Board Administrators, we produce an in‑house certificate to mark completion of the program that is recognized by the Long Term Care Association of Ontario. Graduates receive secondary school credits, co‑operative education experience, a certificate and a pin from the Long Term Care Association.

Contract dates: Friday, January 30, 2026 – Friday, June 26, 2026. Instruction occurs Monday to Friday from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm.

Location: Lindsay Adult and Alternate Education Centre, Lindsay, Ontario.

Responsibilities: The successful applicant will teach the following courses:

  • Health Care (TPJ 3C) – 110 hours of classroom instruction (1 credit). This course develops students’ understanding of basic health‑care procedures, safe use of instruments, equipment, and materials; health‑care terminology; anatomy and physiology of major body systems; health‑ and safety issues; environmental and societal issues; professional standards; and career opportunities.
  • Health Care (TPJ 4C) – 110 hours of classroom instruction (1 credit). This course focuses on clinical skills needed to assess general health status, accepted health‑care practices, use of instruments and equipment, immune system characteristics, pathology, disease prevention and treatment. Students also study workers’ health and safety, environmental and societal issues, professional standards, and post‑secondary outcomes.
  • Child Development and Gerontology (TOJ 4C) – 110 hours of classroom instruction (1 credit). This course examines child development stages and the aging process; disease processes and health‑wellbeing factors; care skills for children and older adults; legislation governing care; evaluation of social and recreational activities; and awareness of health, safety, environmental, social issues and career opportunities.

Co‑Operative Education: 330 hours of placement (3 credits). Students complete two placements in local Long‑Term Care facilities and one placement in a community care setting. The teacher’s role includes:

  • Secure student placements at Long‑Term Care Facilities and Community Care Settings
  • Ensure all WEA forms are completed and collaborate with the AAEC Principal on any MOA/MOU
  • Confirm students have all necessary documentation for placement
  • Create a Personalized Placement Learning Plan (PPLP) with each student before placement
  • Supervise, mentor, and instruct students during placements

NOTE: Program will not proceed if student enrollment is insufficient.

Remuneration: $52.25 per hour – total contract hours: 705.

Qualifications: Registered Nurse or Registered Practical Nurse. Preference to applicants who are Certified Teachers registered with the Ontario College of Teachers and those with experience in a long‑term care setting.
