Duties And Responsibilities

The Personal Support Worker provides assistance based on individual service plans, in a team-based environment, to students with disabilities in the Attendant Services Program. The service is client directed in nature and available on a 24-hour basis to enable students with physical disabilities to live on campus and pursue post-secondary education while receiving service that maintains their autonomy and dignity. The primary responsibility of the Personal Support Worker is the safety of the clients.

Please note that successful candidates must provide a recent Police Check with Vulnerable Sector.

Main Accountabilities
  • Leading a team of attendants while on shift to work as a team to provide service to students with disabilities
  • Documenting of services provided and following of reporting procedures.
  • Personal hygiene, which may include:
  • Dressing, undressing
  • Washing, bathing, showering, bed bath
  • Oral care
  • Hair care
  • Preventive skin care, including changing of non-sterile dressings
  • Personal Grooming (including make-up, shaving)
  • Assistance with medication (premeasured in a blister pack from a pharmacy only)
  • Menstrual care
  • Bowel and bladder care, including emptying and changing of leg and night bags, application and maintenance of external condom.
  • Transferring and re-positioning
  • Operation of transfer devices, and evacuation chairs (Lifts and turners)
  • Assistance with range of motion exercises*
  • Limited assistance with some respiratory devices (CPAP/B1PAP machines, AMBU bags)*
  • Ostomy* and Stoma care*
  • Must be trained by the Nursing Supervisor of Health and Counselling Services
  • Other assistance, which may include:
  • Laundry and housekeeping, such as making beds, cleaning dishes, etc.
  • Meal preparation and feeding
  • Assistance with Registered Service Animals
  • Other various task according to the needs of the individual clients
Qualifications

The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:

  • Knowledge of resident hygiene, optimal functioning, well-being, feeding, elimination
  • Knowledge of transfer and positioning techniques
  • Knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation
  • Ability to follow client care plan and carry out activities as directed
  • Ability to follow safety procedures to maintain a safe and clean environment
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the job
  • Must demonstrate respect for client choice, privacy and confidentiality
  • Must have good interpersonal and communications skills to work respectfully with clients, colleagues and staff
  • Must have good organizational and time management skills to be able to prioritize and manage time effectively
  • Must be self-motivated with the ability to work independently
  • Must be reliable, punctual, flexible, adaptable, tactful
Education And Experience

The above is normally acquired through the completion of:

  • Personal Support Worker Certificate, including at least 1,000 work hours with the Personal Support Worker Program
  • Valid Standard First Aid and CPR
