Job description

Applications are invited for the temporary part-time position of CICE Learning Facilitator located at the Daniel J. Patterson Campus. The starting salary is $30.70/hour for up to 24 hours per week. Additional hours may be required at peak times. This position is a casual, on‑call position with no regularly scheduled hours.

Reporting to the Academic Portfolio Manager, CICE (Community Integration through Cooperative Education), the successful candidate will join the casual, on‑call pool of Learning Facilitators to assist students to maximize learning potential. Based on the student’s aptitude and skill assessment, the Learning Facilitator is responsible for recommending and implementing modification of course outcomes, tests, and assignments in collaboration with the faculty. The Learning Facilitator attends classes with students and conducts academic support sessions. The incumbent champions an inclusive approach to the students’ college experience.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Attending CICE core classes to support students in completing the modified curriculum presented by CICE faculty
  • Working closely with faculty, support staff, program lead and CICE student to modify and support existing curricula (outlines, tests, assignments) to meet the student’s learning styles/needs in accordance with the student’s assessed skill and aptitude
  • Providing classroom support such as note taking, lab support, facilitation of group work and advocating the students’ concerns
  • Modifying and supplementing class material for student use
  • Determining techniques and tools to utilize for individual/group tutorial sessions based on the best fit for each individual student
  • Setting up and assisting with the use of adaptive equipment when needed.
  • Assisting students to access appropriate college resources (Financial Aid, Health, Wellness and Accessibility Services, Academic Counseling)
  • Monitoring and escalating inappropriate student behaviours' to CICE Manager
  • Preparing written summaries of student’s achieved outcomes and progress based on results (copy to student file)
  • Providing a smooth transition into college/academic life
  • Assisting students to access appropriate college resources
  • Promoting inclusion of the CICE students in the classroom and College Community
  • Tracking/filing and recording program documents and other pertinent program information for future reference by staff
  • Meeting with staff and faculty periodically to review protocol and discuss new or revised approaches
Required qualifications:
  • Two (2) year diploma in one of the following fields of study: Educational Assistant, Developmental Service Worker, Social Service Worker or studies in Behavioural Science, Autism, Disability Studies or similar field of study
  • Minimum of two (2) years-experience working with adults with developmental disabilities, and/or persons with significant learning challenges
  • Proficient use of standard computer and assistive technology applications
  • Understanding of curriculum design and modification
  • Strong desire to help students succeed
  • Comfortable working with students individually as well as speaking in front of groups
