Operational Stress Injury Clinic

The OSI Clinic provides specialized mental health assessment and treatment to clients referred by Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC), the RCMP, and the Department of National Defense (DND). Clients are referred for work-related psychological stress and trauma (e.g. Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and other anxiety disorders; Depression; Chronic Pain, etc.). The clinical services of the OSI Clinic are provided by an interdisciplinary team consisting of psychiatrists, psychologists, registered nurses, and social workers.

As part of an interdisciplinary care model, the Nurse Practitioner is an advanced-practice nurse who leverages graduate-level education, extensive nursing knowledge, and expertise to address the mental health needs of clients dealing with work-related stress and trauma. The Nurse Practitioner will practice independently within their legislative scope, with primary duties and responsibilities focused on psychiatric care. While clients may also have physical health needs, the Nurse Practitioner will work collaboratively with community partners who address the physical health needs of OSI Clinic clients.

Duties
  • Work collaboratively, cooperatively and effectively within the OSI Team and with the community partner organizations.
  • Conduct specialized mental health assessments, diagnostic, therapeutic management and consultation activities that assist our team and stakeholders in addressing the needs of clients who have OSI-related mental health issues.
  • Write comprehensive mental health reports and complete medical questionnaires in a timely fashion for treatment recommendations to third-party stakeholders.
  • Integrate clinical findings informed by evidence-based practice to formulate diagnoses and develop mental health treatment plans.
  • Maintain contact with the referring person from VAC, RCMP, and DND in the development of treatment plans and referrals.
  • Support ongoing psychiatric treatment plans and follow-up appointments as necessary.
  • Collaborate and provide consultation to family physicians and community service providers to support the clinical needs of clients.
  • Provide education, mentorship and support to the health care team, primary care providers, hospital partners, and community groups regarding mental illness, treatment, and recovery.
  • Participate in identifying and creating effective measures to evaluate and improve services.
  • Participate in program evaluation activities as approved by management.
  • Utilize tele-mental health and other distance technologies in the provision of services in outlying communities.
  • Collaborate with the Canadian network of OSI Clinics.
  • Follow the leadership and mandate of the OSI Clinic and the Operational Stress Injuries National Network.
  • Maintain current knowledge of best practices and nursing standards by reviewing literature, attending educational events, networking with colleagues, etc.
  • Ensure documentation and data collection are maintained in accordance with hospital, college and legislative standards and timelines.
  • Complete all required non-clinical administrative documentation (i.e. workload measurement, quality improvement, forms, etc).
  • Complete outcome monitoring measures (CROMIS) in relation to client care.
  • Work in a manner that complies with staff and patient/client safety practices, policies and procedures of the Royal.
  • Ensure a work environment that is conducive to the Royal’s Anti-Racism, Harassment, & Discrimination Free Workplace Policy.
  • Other duties as required.
Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Nursing or BSCN with specialty certification as Nurse Practitioner is required.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience is required.
  • Current registration as a Registered Nurse in the Province of Ontario in the Extended Class is required (CNO).
  • Specialty certification as a Nurse Practitioner – Primary Health Care (NP-PHC) or Nurse Practitioner – Adult.
  • Master’s preparation as a Nurse Practitioner or BSCN with specialty certification as a Nurse Practitioner.
  • Able to demonstrate achievement of the nurse practitioner competencies of professional role, responsibility and accountability, health assessment and diagnosis, therapeutic management and health promotion and prevention of illness and injury.
  • Able to demonstrate knowledge of relevant legislation and incorporation of this legislation into practice (Mental health Act, Health Care Consent Act, Substitute Decision Act, PHIPA and CSA).
  • Recognized leadership skills with the ability to build the inter-disciplinary team approach to care delivery.
  • Able to work effectively both independently and as a member of a professional inter-disciplinary treatment team.
  • Excellent written and communication skills.
  • CPR.
  • Valid Ontario drivers license (travel may be required).
  • English level A- is mandatory in oral comprehension, expression, reading, and writing. Bilingual (French/English) is considered an asset.
Salary Range

63.66 to 74.46 per hour
