Job summary

A community health organization in Ottawa is seeking a part-time Nurse Practitioner to provide primary health care and Opioid Agonist Treatment. The ideal candidate will have a Master's degree in nursing, experience in a public health setting, and be bilingual in French and English. Component/Team: Oasis

Status: Permanent, 0.8 FTE Part-Time (28 hours per week)

Salary Scale: $114,332 - $137,756 annualized salary plus benefits, both pro-rated to part-time status

Start Date: Immediately

Position Description:

The Nurse Practitioner is a member of the Oasis team and works closely with team members to provide the highest possible quality of health care services to clients. The role of the Nurse Practitioner is to work with all clients to help them achieve their desired health goals.

Oasis provides harm reduction based health and social services (including HIV and Hep C treatment) for people who use drugs who experience barriers to health and recovery due to stigma, poverty, criminalization and mental illness. Oasis core target groups include people who inject drugs, people who smoke crack and people involved in street-level sex work.

The Nurse Practitioner will provide primary health care and Opioid Agonist Treatment (OAT) with support to Oasis clients.

Reporting Relationship:

As an employee of the Sandy Hill Community Health Centre, the incumbent is responsible to the Director of Integrated Health Services and through them to the Executive Director.

As a Nurse Practitioner, the incumbent is responsible to meeting the licensing and regulatory requirements of the College of Nurses as the professional governing body.

Skills, Education and Experience:

Requirements for this position include:

Education and Language

  • A Master’s degree in nursing from a recognized university
  • Certificate of competence from the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse in the Extended Class with the ability to prescribe controlled substances
  • Under the Centre’s designation to provide French Language Services this position is designated bilingual required:
    • French (oral expression): Advanced +
    • French (oral comprehension): Advanced +
    • French (reading comprehension): Advanced +
  • Fluency in English, both oral and written

Professional Experience

  • Three to five years’ experience in community and/or public health settings
  • Experience working with a broad range of populations including: people who use drugs, people with HIV/AIDS, hepatitis C, street involved people, transgender, men who have sex with men, sex trade workers, people with mental illness, people with substance use disorder, and other marginalized groups
  • Experience in mental health and substance use disorder
  • Experience providing Opioid Agonist Treatment will be considered an asset
  • Experience in chronic disease management
  • Experience working with clients with HIV/AIDS, hepatitis C
  • Experience working within a harm reduction approach

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the impact of social/cultural/economic factors on the determinants of health
  • Knowledge, understanding, and sensitivity to the complexity of issues arising for individuals who have experienced homelessness, substance use disorder, poverty, incarceration and/or mental illness
  • Excellent counseling skills
  • Excellent physical assessment skills
  • Familiarity with the principles of trauma-informed care
  • Strong crisis intervention skills, suicide intervention skills, organizational skills, communication skills and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within and across multi-disciplinary teams and community partners
  • Ability to work with people with concurrent disorders and marginalized groups.
  • Ability to work with clients presenting a wide range of health issues
  • Commitment to and knowledge of community-based health care
  • Demonstrated flexibility, sound judgment, initiative & creativity
  • Proficiency in the use of computers and various software applications

Conditions of Employment:

Hours of work will be consistent with the clinic’s hours which is Monday to Friday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and/or from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.
