Overview

Manufacturing Engineering Manager – Fuel Handling and Engineered Solutions (FHES) at BWXT Nuclear Energy Canada Inc. (BWXT NEC) leads the FHES Manufacturing Engineering team in Peterborough, Ontario. BWXT NEC supplies nuclear fuel and fuel channel components, services, equipment and parts for the CANDU nuclear power industry. This is a critical leadership role in a high-performing, highly regulated environment, overseeing a multidisciplinary team of project professionals to drive accountability, excellence, and collaboration across locations.

Reporting to the Vice President of Fuel Handling and Engineered Solutions, the Manufacturing Engineering Manager is responsible for the execution of the manufacturing business and resources of the FHES group, and consultation of the Precision Manufacturing, Inc. (PMI) Oakville operations. The role involves aligning manufacturing operations with company goals, developing processes, and contributing to long-term strategic planning.

Responsibilities
  • Ultimate accountability for manufacturing operations including execution, estimating and customer escalation.
  • Lead, develop and manage a team of manufacturing engineers, planners and specialists to execute large, multi-disciplinary design/build and build-to-print manufacturing projects.
  • Responsible for cost, schedule and quality performance of manufacturing/supply scope.
  • Recruiting, training, performance management, capacity, long-term strategy and succession planning for the Manufacturing Engineering Team.
  • Lead the preparation of estimates for all manufacturing work including cost, schedule, cash flow forecasts; coordinate inputs from quality and shop operations.
  • Prepare and approve estimates and customer proposals for large manufacturing projects in accordance with DOA; review and approve customer POs per DOA.
  • Develop pricing strategies in conjunction with commercial operations for strategic manufacturing bids.
  • Manage department financial budgets and create periodic financial forecasts.
  • Monitor and control all manufacturing work and develop recovery plans for variances.
  • Interface with supply chain and vendors to resolve technical challenges and performance variances.
  • Interface with customers for strategic bids and act as Project Sponsor for large projects.
  • Conduct facility tours for key suppliers and customers.
  • Analyze and evaluate assigned projects to meet standards, practices and program requirements.
  • Identify and execute continuous improvement projects within the manufacturing business.
  • Identify and execute manufacturing infrastructure projects to develop capabilities and technology; prepare ACE requests and approve ACEs.
  • Develop action plans to anticipate and respond to manufacturing problems; lead multidisciplinary teams to solve issues.
  • Provide cross-functional technical guidance and mentor others.
  • Ensure proper documentation of technical data in line with engineering and quality policies.
  • Participate as a presenter or reviewer in technical and program reviews.
  • Prepare detailed short and long-term budgets and CAPEX forecasts.
  • Develop, review and approve Manufacturing policies, procedures and work instructions.
  • Lead special projects and integrate new concepts related to equipment, software, producibility and material handling.
  • Communicate with Design, Quality, Production and Project Management on the state of each program.
Knowledge and Experience
  • BS or MS in Engineering, Licensed by PEO.
  • Prefered 10+ years’ experience in Nuclear, Aerospace, Transportation, or other highly regulated and process-based design.
  • 10 years experience in manufacturing with proven success in a technical leadership role.
  • Significant experience with project schedule and financial metrics and other project management methodologies.
  • Knowledge and experience with machining (conventional + CNC/CAM), fitting/welding, assembly and materials including stainless steels, Al-bronze, nickel alloys, zirconium, etc.
  • Knowledge or experience with metrology, Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerances (GD&T), blue print reading.
  • Demonstrated ability in project planning/execution, including development of processes and process improvements.
  • Very strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Desired Characteristics
  • Basic knowledge of common non-destructive examination (NDE) techniques.
  • Experience with ASME Code rules for identification and traceability of materials, manufacturing processes, testing, etc.
  • Experience with manufacturing of instrumentation and control equipment, PLC systems, cable assemblies, panels, industrial automation; familiarity with wiring diagrams and electrical schematics.
  • Technical writing experience including procedures, customer proposals, and technical reports.
  • Experience in cost-estimating multi-disciplinary equipment and facility projects.
  • Experience with Primavera (P6) project scheduling software.
Compensation and Benefits

The base salary range for this position in Ontario at the start of employment is expected to be between $145,000 and $187,000 per year. The base salary offered is based on local job market factors and may vary further based on factors such as knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Total compensation may include an annual cash incentive and a full range of medical, retirement, and other benefits. Details of participation will be provided with an offer of employment.
