Position Summary
BCIT’s Corporate Services department is seeking two (2) regular, full-time (1.0 FTE) Logistics Associates. As part of the Corporate Services’ Logistics team, performs the day‑to‑day shipping, receiving and logistic operations for BCIT. Receives incoming supplies and materials, prepares materials for shipping and issues supplies across the Institute; documents and tracks incoming and outgoing materials and inventory supplies. Performs mailroom operations, including receiving, sorting, distributing and recording of the incoming & outgoing mail. Moves, collects and distributes Institute equipment, materials and supplies and supports room set‑up services throughout the various BCIT campuses, event centres and locations.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Unloads trucks that make deliveries to all of the various BCIT campuses and locations; uses logistics equipment, such as forklifts and power jacks, to unload heavier deliveries.
- Reviews documentation and incoming material, matching purchase orders with packing slips, confirming tracking identification numbers, verifying destination and confirming signing delivery receipts; inspects goods to ensure they are as ordered, are in acceptable condition and are in accordance with “WHMIS” guidelines.
- Verifies that electrical goods are CSA or equivalently approved. Arranges for unapproved items to be electrically inspected and approved by appropriate safety or designated qualified personnel. Advises purchasing staff or end user of any issues that arise from inspections.
- Makes sure that perishable goods and dangerous goods are safely and properly stored until pick‑up/delivered and that the storage requirements are maintained while being delivered.
- Communicates with vendors and the Purchasing department regarding order errors or discrepancies.
- Assigns asset/tracking numbers on equipment being received in accordance with the Institute’s guidelines.
- Maintains files as necessary for receiving and shipping documentation. Updates the Institute’s ERP system with receipt and delivery information and inventories entries of goods and supplies.
- Advises clients when goods are ready for delivery or when pick‑up arrangements need to be made.
- Delivers and collects material and goods, communicating and coordinating with clients on the delivery/pickup schedules and locations.
- Receives, sorts, distributes and posts both internal and external mail, using both direct or contracted methods.
- Prepares a variety of goods for shipment by packaging items, gathering or preparing appropriate documentation and labeling items in accordance with various local, regional or international regulations. Weighs packages and completes waybills accordingly. Arranges for export documentation when necessary. Makes sure shipping documentation is properly completed, signed and filed.
- Utilizes courier software to arrange for courier/shipment pick‑up and to determine the appropriate courier or freight operator based on shipment destination and items being shipped.
- Maintains necessary files for shipping documentation.
- Advises clients on various shipping/courier options and costs. Communicates on updates and reports on goods awaiting shipment.
- Issues/dispenses goods as required from various warehousing locations by completing requisition forms for inventoried goods, scheduling the safe pickup, delivery or dispensing of goods. Makes sure proper safety and dangerous goods handling procedures are followed accordingly.
- Supports the disposal of waste chemicals and bio‑hazardous/infectious waste by providing pickup, transportation and drop‑off services at the Institute’s hazardous waste locations in accordance with established procedures.
- Handles and distributes heavy material, equipment and supplies, occasionally for extended periods. Ensures that material is handled, transported, and stored in a safe and efficient manner.
- Utilizes the Institute’s trucks & vans (up to 5‑ton capacity), and logistics equipment to help move, deliver and pick up material and goods, making sure safe driving and operations are applied and road safety laws and practices are adhered to, both on Institute property or on common roadways.
- Assists Facilities and Campus Development and the Schools in lifts and moves, including setting up and taking down offices, classrooms, laboratories and meeting/exam rooms.
- Ensures the cleanliness of vehicles and reports any maintenance requirements. Performs general preventative maintenance on gas and battery powered mobile equipment.
- Maintains warehouse in a clean and safe condition by cleaning shelves and floors and storing items so that there are no safety hazards.
- Responds to customer needs and efficiencies on the delivery of goods, ensuring Institute standards of quality and service are maintained for all customers. Answers incoming queries on inventoried and warehouse goods/supplies.
- Receives bookstore goods by adding price labels and entering inventory, costs and selling prices into the bookstore’s Point‑of‑sale software.
- Participates in Records Custodian training and remains current with record‑keeping practices, policies, and procedures (both BCIT and FOIPOP).
- Undertakes related duties, as assigned, consistent with the job grade of this position.
Qualifications

Education:
- Grade 12 plus additional training of up to one year in logistics operations/warehousing management post‑secondary education.
- License(s)/Certifications(s):
- Must have a valid BC Drivers’ License with a 12 month clean drivers abstract.
- Class 1, 4 & 5 Forklift Practical Evaluation for up to 5500lb capacity.
- WHMIS certification.

- Successful candidates must successfully complete the following within six months of employment and are responsible for ensuring the certifications and licenses are current and up to date.

Experience:
- Two years’ general experience plus 2 year experience in a similar position which includes knowledge of or experience with automated inventory systems.
- Must be familiar with the operation of material handling equipment, i.e. forklift and pallet jacks (up to 5500lb capacity).
- Must be familiar and comfortable operating a up to a 5‑ton capacity delivery truck and possess well‑developed driving skills.
- Must be familiar with proper lifting and maneuvering techniques for moving and delivering heavier equipment and materials.
- Must have knowledge of and experience navigating the Greater Vancouver and Lower Mainland area.
- Safety and first aid knowledge.
Software/Computer Application(s) and Expertise:
- Microsoft Office, Internet and email.
- Knowledge of and/or experience with automated inventory systems.
- Ability to navigate inventory and material tracking systems.
Communication/Interpersonal Skills:
- Good interpersonal skills to communicate with vendors, external and internal parties.
- Must be a team player.
- Good organizational skills.
Other Skills/Abilities:
- Ability to lift and carry heavy objects of up to 50 lbs without the aid of a hydraulic lift or hand truck.

Salary Range
Salary Grade 7: $59,214 - $64,490 per annum.

External hires are initially placed at the minimum of the salary range with set progressions to the maximum as per the Collective Agreement. Salary prorated based on percentage and term of appointment.
