Job Description
We are seeking a full-time Laboratory Manager for the Regional Genetics Diagnostic Laboratory (GDL) to join the Regional Genetics Program based at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The Laboratory Manager oversees and manages daily laboratory operations through the Quality Management System and supervises laboratory personnel. Reporting to the Director of Precision Health and the Regional Genetics Program, the Laboratory Manager collaborates with the Laboratory Director and the Chair of the Department of Genetics to maintain high-quality clinical service and to develop and implement a multi-year strategy for ongoing innovation.
The Regional Genetics Program at CHEO provides diagnostic testing, counseling, and therapeutic services to individuals and families dealing with genetic conditions. We serve a population of approximately 1.4 million in Eastern Ontario, Western Quebec, Nunavut, and parts of Northern Ontario. The GDL provides comprehensive molecular and cytogenomic testing for pediatric and adult populations across a range of disorders, including cardiac, cancer, and hematologic conditions. Methodologies routinely used include karyotyping, SNP microarray, next generation sequencing (targeted panels, whole genome/exome sequencing), FISH, and optical genome mapping.
Our laboratory is accredited by Accreditation Canada Diagnostics and is a partner in Genome-wide Sequencing Ontario. The cytogenetics section is approved by the Children’s Oncology Group (COG) in pediatric oncology. Our mandate covers clinical and laboratory services across all life stages (preconception, prenatal, pediatric, and adult). We host postgraduate teaching programs (RCPSC residency in Medical Genetics & Genomics and CCMG fellowships in Biochemical Genetics and Genetic and Genomic Diagnostics) and support strong research programs. The GDL is an affiliated clinical site for both the Michener Institute and BCIT Genetics Technology Programs.
Plan, develop, and implement innovative, effective, and efficient laboratory services in collaboration with Laboratory and Program Directors.
Ensure procedures are performed in accordance with accreditation and safety standards and hospital policies.
Recruit, manage, and evaluate competency and performance of laboratory personnel and maintain an effective training program for staff.
Support staff in achieving service goals and objectives, drive continuous improvement, and provide effective leadership and project management for operations and process improvements.
Assist with development and management of the laboratory budget, including staffing, supplies, equipment, and purchased services.
Maintain ongoing personal professional development by attending workshops, conferences, and courses related to goal achievement and performance enhancement.
Additional notes: As of March 29, 2021, CHEO conducts a more comprehensive pre-screening and evaluation process, which may include written tests, practical exams, or other assessments. All candidates who meet essential and preferred qualifications may be tested.
