Parks Canada, Jasper, AB — Salary: $59,291–$81,989 per year; Part-time. Schedule includes overtime and weekends as needed. Location: Jasper, AB. Benefits include dental care, paid time off, and paid vacation.

EG-02/EG-03 term/assignment at level: EG-02 $59,291 to $74,534 per year; EG-03 $65,216 to $81,989 per year. Closing date: 28 February 2025, 23:59 Pacific Time. Responsibilities
  • As part of the vegetation management team, support a wide range of projects to maintain and improve ecological integrity throughout Jasper National Park.
  • Actively manage non-native vegetation using integrated techniques including prevention methods, manual control, and herbicide application.
  • Support restoration and reclamation activities related to invasive vegetation management, wildfire protection, and wildlife habitat improvement.
  • Coordinate vegetation fieldwork in front country and back country locations; fieldwork involves hiking long distances on and off trail, over varied or strenuous terrain, in remote locations or overnight.
  • Monitor vegetation trends using established protocols; collect, manage, and analyze vegetation and spatial data.
  • Assist with supervising and training seasonal staff.
  • Provide support for additional projects within the fire, vegetation and ecological monitoring programs.

Qualifications

Essential qualifications are listed below and may be assessed during the application process.

  • Education
    • Stream 1 (EG-02): Minimum completion of two years of a post-secondary program related to environmental and/or natural sciences (e.g., biology, ecology, geology), or an acceptable combination of education, training and experience in a related field.
    • Stream 2 (EG-03): Graduation with a degree or diploma from a recognized university or college with specialization in environmental and/or natural sciences or other discipline relevant to the position; or a combination of two years of post-secondary education with training and experience in a related field. Degree equivalency may apply.
  • Experience
    • Both streams require experience in travelling or working in wilderness areas under varied climatic conditions; experience using data/sample collection equipment and means of transportation.
    • Stream 1 (EG-02): Experience collecting data/samples on vegetation, fauna, water and soil; experience applying scientifically and technically recognized methods and protocols.
    • Stream 2 (EG-03): Experience participating in two or more phases of vegetation management or monitoring projects (design, logistics, active management, data/sample collection, data analysis, presentation of results); experience contributing to preparation of technical/scientific reports or public presentations.
  • Knowledge
    • Knowledge of specialized technical and scientific equipment operation and maintenance; knowledge of terrestrial environment, vegetation and wildlife characteristics, as well as weather conditions specific to the Rockies Ecosystem; knowledge of vegetation management activities and techniques.
  • Abilities
    • Ability to follow procedures and protocols for data/sample collection and compilation, and to conduct active resource management activities; ability to use a variety of computer applications in development and maintenance of databases; ability to work outside in varied geographic and climatic conditions.
    • Stream 2 (EG-03): Ability to assist in the preparation and presentation of technical reports and to communicate with a variety of audiences using a variety of techniques.
  • Personal suitability
    • Exercises sound judgment; communicates effectively; takes responsibility; demonstrates integrity.
  • Asset Occupational Certification
    • Possession of Wilderness First Aid and CPR certificate (asset).
  • Asset Experience
    • Experience in vegetation identification (native and non-native); experience in work planning and supervising crews; experience in safe application of herbicides; experience in ecological restoration or reclamation activities and techniques.
Operational requirements
  • Willingness to wear a Parks Canada uniform and prescribed protective equipment.
  • Willingness to work and travel in varied terrain, weather conditions, isolated locations and by various means of transportation.
  • Willingness to work irregular hours, overtime, weekends and/or statutory holidays as required.
  • Will be required to obtain pesticide applicator certification; Wilderness First Aid and CPR certification.
Conditions of employment
  • Reliability Status security clearance – obtain and maintain.
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid class 5 driver’s license (or equivalent).
  • Will be required to undergo pre-placement and periodic medical checks.
