Help shape projects from first sketch to final site walk. ISL’s Landscape Architecture + Urban Design (LAUD) studio in Calgary is looking for an Intermediate Landscape Architectural Technologist who enjoys being on site as much as in the studio, and who is comfortable taking a project all the way through construction review and municipal acceptance.

You’ll join a 20+ person studio focused on landscape architecture, public realm, and site design across Alberta, Saskatchewan, and British Columbia. Our work spans parks, streetscapes, open spaces, mixed-use environments, and infrastructure projects that are design-led, technically rigorous, and rooted in context and long-term performance.

A Little About You

You are a Landscape Architectural Technologist who likes moving between muddy boots and the computer screen. You are confident interpreting plans on site, talking with contractors, and documenting what you see. Back in the studio, you enjoy resolving details, coordinating with the broader team, and getting drawing sets ready for tender and construction.

  • A studio environment where you work closely with landscape architects, designers, fellow technologists and internal teams.
  • A mix of field reviews and desk-based production.
  • The chance to own construction review tasks instead of only supporting them.
  • Mentorship from senior staff and the opportunity to mentor junior technologists.
A Little About the Role

Our Landscape Architecture and Urban Design studios are engaged from early concepts through construction. We combine strong design thinking, technical rigour, and practical, buildable solutions to deliver landscapes that respond to climate, community needs, and site-specific conditions. In Calgary, much of your time will be focused on construction review and contract administration support, backed by solid technical production.

In this role, you will:

  • Support construction reviews, including pre-construction meetings, scheduled field reviews, and end-of-project walkthroughs.
  • Observe work in the field to help confirm general conformance with contract documents and municipal standards.
  • Prepare concise, clear site reports and tracking for deficiencies, changes, and follow-up actions.
  • Support contract administration activities: review shop drawings and submittals, respond to RFIs, assist with deficiency lists, and support CCC/FAC and municipal acceptance processes.
  • Update and coordinate record drawings and close-out documentation.
  • Prepare design and technical documentation across project stages, from base plans and site analysis through detailed drawings and tender-ready packages.
  • Work within established CAD and digital standards to produce coordinated drawing packages and assist with quantity take-offs and cost estimates.
  • Collaborate daily with landscape architects, civil engineers, and other disciplines to resolve details and keep projects moving.
  • Mentor junior technologists and designers while remaining open to learning from senior staff.
Your Experience and Skills

Your cover letter and resume should show us:

  • Diploma in Landscape Architectural Technology (or a closely related 2–4 year program).
  • Minimum 5+ years of experience in a landscape architecture, consulting, or design office, including field and construction exposure.
  • Hands-on construction review experience: field reviews, deficiency tracking, and a strong understanding of review and approval processes.
  • Proven experience preparing complete landscape contract drawing sets and coordinating with other disciplines.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work directly with contractors, municipal reviewers, and internal and external partners.
  • High proficiency in AutoCAD and/or Civil 3D and comfort working within structured CAD standards; Land F/X experience is an asset.
  • Working knowledge of SketchUp, Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, Bluebeam, and basic visualization tools.
  • Solid understanding of Alberta / Western Canadian climate, soils, plant materials, and typical landscape construction methods.
  • Class 5 driver’s license and ability to travel to work sites in and around Calgary and across Alberta as needed.
  • Experience with Revit and BIM360.
  • Eligibility for, or registration as, a Landscape Architectural Technologist (LAT) with the AALA.
  • Experience leading construction review on landscape projects.
  • Prior experience mentoring other technologists and coordinating with multidisciplinary teams.
Why You'll Like Working Here

Studio environment, real projects: You’ll join a collaborative landscape and urban design studio that shares work, ideas, and lessons learned across offices. Our team delivers public realm, community development, parks, streetscapes, and infrastructure projects from early concept through construction and close-out, giving you the ability to see your work built and performing over time.

Calgary-based with field time: This role is based in our Calgary office. A typical week combines studio time with field visits to active construction sites. Occasional work-from-home days for focused design or CADD production can be discussed and will vary depending on the time of year, project needs, and construction season.
