Overview

Evergreen is seeking an Indigenous Land-Based Outdoor Educator to join our team. This role will be located at Evergreen Brick Works on the traditional territory and homelands of the Wendat and Petun First Nations, the Haudenosaunee, and the Mississaugas of the Credit.

Responsibilities

This role supports Evergreen’s Indigenous Land Connections (ILC) offering as part of the Visiting Schools Program, guiding Indigenous-led immersive journeys through Evergreen Brick Works, with activities adapting to the seasons.

Responsibilities include:

  • Deliver engaging public and private educational classes and outdoor nature-based activities for children, youth and adults (e.g., Visiting Schools Program, Camps, Nature School, Team Building or Tours).
  • Contribute to the development and delivery of the Indigenous Land Connections offering as part of the Visiting Schools Program, Professional Development for Educators and Community Partnerships.
  • Facilitate land-based and nature-connected programs that reflect Evergreen's Education and Children's Programs values: Place-Based, Ecological, Experiential, Active and Mobile, Arts-Infused, Integrated, Inclusive.
  • Be a contact for hosting Indigenous communities, organizations, and partners; duties may include fire keeping, caring for medicines, and participating in ceremony depending on teachings and skills.
  • Deliver programming with loose parts, natural materials, and inquiry-based learning.
  • Reflect on work to improve programs; deliver programs safely per Evergreen policies, including risk assessments.
  • Provide welcoming experiences and act as an ambassador, liaising with teachers, parents / guardians, and volunteers.
  • Document and report issues (incidents, customer service, spaces, materials).
  • Seasonal assistance with summer camps or winter skating programs may be required.

Target qualifications and core competencies :

  • First Nations, Métis, and / or Inuit heritage (or eligibility). Note: Evergreen may require membership or citizenship documentation for roles involving Indigenous Knowledge or Indigenous-led programming.
  • 1-3 years in education or environment-related work with children.
  • Experience facilitating learning for all ages; outdoors experience in educational programs.
  • Ability to work with diverse ages, cultures, backgrounds, and abilities.
  • Strong communication skills (clear, confident, respectful, age-appropriate).
  • Current Standard First Aid & CPR C (or willingness to obtain pre-start).
  • Clear police reference check (provided by Evergreen).

You might have the following assets :

  • Experience with Forest & Nature School or Nature Connection routines.
  • Experience with experiential, emergent, inquiry-based, play-based, or place-based learning.
  • Naturalist or ecological knowledge.
  • Fluent in French.

Working conditions
  • On-site at Brick Works in Toronto for in-person programming (100%).
  • Work with a variety of people, primarily children.
  • Outdoor work, occasionally in inclement weather.
  • Participation in flood prep, evacuation, and clean-up if necessary.
  • Available Monday to Sunday; shifts 5–8 hours; mostly during school hours.
  • Standing for extended periods; ability to lift 20+ lbs regularly.
  • Role supervised by the Program Manager.
