Job Description
POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY

The Home Heating Worker is responsible for operating the Home Heating program, which provides qualified applicants with access to home heating assistance through an online, telephone, or in person process at locations as determined. The Home Heating Worker will ensure compliance with Federal/ Provincial standards and The Salvation Army mission, vision, values, and standards.

ACCOUNTABILITIES
  • Conduct and support the client intake and assessment process.
  • Connect qualified clients with approved assistance amounts
  • Connect clients with other appropriate services through referrals and warm transfers
  • Prepares client financial eligibility and assistance statements
  • Provides excellent client service support
  • Record and maintain detailed statistical information and reports within parameters set by The Salvation Army and the provincial government.
  • Represent the Salvation Army in a professional and positive manner.
  • Assist Program Lead in program development, planning and implementation
  • Work alongside Program Lead in organizing increased access to program
  • Provide Executive Director, Program Lead or designate with daily/weekly reports as determined.
  • Performs other duties as assigned
CRITICAL RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT

The incumbent conducts routine interactions and provides clarification of information.

Internal: MU’s team members, various leadership and management teams, clients, volunteers as required.

External: Community members & partners, contractors, vendors, donors.

MANAGERIAL/TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Reports directly to the Business Manager.

Direct reports: none.

May show others how to perform certain procedures.

FINANCIAL AND MATERIAL MANAGEMENT
  • Limited input into new policy development pertaining to own job.
  • Receipts all applications using software if required.

WORKING CONDITIONS
  • The work environment is typically in office space
  • Required to travel as needed
  • The work schedule is determined in consultation with the Executive Director and may vary between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. according to operational requirements of responsibility.
  • Some disagreeable conditions include dealing with angry people, individuals with mental health and addiction, verbal abuse, stress caused by large responsibility level
  • This job requires the ability to work independently while part of a team, set priorities, manage multiple tasks, and meet deadlines.
  • The performance of the job requires continuously sitting for long periods of time, entering client data and may include some lifting.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
  • Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Alternative combination of education and experience may be considered.
Education, Qualifications and Certifications
  • Completed High School Diploma
  • Diploma in Social Services or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience an asset
  • Able to provide a Criminal Background Check that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required
Experience and Knowledge
  • Have two but less than three years prior related experience, preferably frontline experience in a social service environment and a solid understanding of the issues necessitating a client accessing TSA services
  • Training in crisis intervention, conflict resolution and mediation skills
  • First Aid and CPR certificate an asset (willingness to obtain)
  • Have a thorough knowledge of good customer service expectation
  • Must have a Driver’s License and access to a vehicle
  • Demonstrate effective interpersonal, organizational and time management skills
  • Proficient at Microsoft Office programs including Word; Excel
  • Ability to recognize sensitive issues and maintain confidentiality.
  • Must be sensitive to and respectful of cultural and lifestyle diversity.
Skills and Capabilities
  • Develop an understanding of the Mission of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
  • Ensure compliance with policies and procedures as it relates to external funders.
  • Responsible to work in compliance with the Nova Scotia Health & Safety Act and Regulations
  • Treat the property of The Salvation Army with due care and caution.
  • Lead by example, demonstrate a positive attitude, a strong work ethic, and a willingness to learn and be flexible in the face of change.
  • Knowledge of community-based resources and experience networking with government and social service agencies.
  • Have background in or working awareness of harm reduction, trauma-informed care, suicide intervention, crisis intervention, motivational interviewing.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the psychological and social dynamics of working with individuals who have diverse needs and interests.
  • Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility.
  • Must demonstrate a positive attitude, lifestyle diversity.

This is a temporary Full time position.

Compensation

The target hiring range for this position is $31,134.18 to $38,917.72 with a maximum of $46,701.27.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
