Job description

Purpose:

The purpose of the General Manager I (GM) position is to manage a QSR restaurant or a small cluster of restaurants or points-of-sale in close proximity, with sales generally up to $5M. The GM ensures the restaurant is clean, staffed, open for business, and operates to high operational and financial standards. The GM uses broad discretion and judgment to make leadership decisions and is responsible for the overall success of the restaurant.

Essential Functions:

Open and Close:

Ensures all assistant managers and staff recognize the importance of closing the restaurant to prepare for opening, holding Shift Managers accountable for executing all closing and opening checklist/requirements.

Staffing/Deployment:

  • Understands, adopts, and demonstrates defined manager behaviors to create an engaging environment.
  • Deploys staff and resources to maximize profitability and accepts P&L responsibility.
  • Assigns tasks, prepares schedules, and ensures shift coverage.
  • Provides support, coaching, and encouragement to staff.
  • Handles hiring, termination, promotion decisions, and promotes HMSHost as an employer of choice.
  • Ensures diversity and inclusion policies are understood and implemented.
  • Oversees onboarding and offboarding activities, including compliance and training.
  • Monitors financial and operational data to meet unit goals.
  • Recognizes staff contributions and supports recognition initiatives.
  • Champions Employee Engagement behaviors.
  • Maintains current contact information for all associates.

Product Availability/Working Equipment:

  • Prepares daily orders and stocks units appropriately.
  • Oversees receiving, invoicing, and vendor communication.
  • Maintains proficiency with management systems like MIV, Crunch Time, Kronos.
  • Monitors and maintains equipment, schedules repairs.
  • Participates in audits and minimizes waste.

Brand Knowledge/Proficiency:

  • Assesses and trains staff on skill levels and standards.
  • Embraces technology and encourages staff to adopt new tools.
  • Maintains knowledge of brand standards, contracts, and protocols.
  • Develops strategies to increase revenue.

Visual/Vibe/Appeal:

  • Manages daily activities of staff.
  • Resolves customer and staff issues, escalating when necessary.
  • Provides ongoing feedback and develops team skills.
  • Implements marketing and promotional activities.

Safety:

  • Understands and enforces safety and health standards.
  • Trains staff on wellness and COVID-19 protocols.

Reporting and Schedule:

  • Typically reports to the Director of Operations or area leader.
  • Works a varied schedule, including opening, busy dayparts, and closing shifts.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum 3 years of restaurant P&L management experience, with 5-7 years of overall restaurant experience.
  • Educational background in Food Service Management or Culinary programs may substitute for some experience.
  • Strong leadership, delegation, and issue resolution skills.
  • Knowledge of HMSHost policies, standards, and operations.
  • Ability to understand instructions, menus, and standards.
