Overview
POSITION OVERVIEW: Responsible for transporting freight across dock area to/from trailers for loading, ensuring safety of freight being moved, and maintain freight records. As a Freight Handler, flexibility regarding shifts will be required.
Responsibilities
- Perform freight handling using appropriate motorized and manual equipment including but not limited to forklift, electric pallet jack and hand truck.
- Verify documentation matches freight description (e.g., type, weight, hazardous materials), using current electronic or manual system.
- Following all safety and loading protocols/policies/procedures utilizing appropriate tools and resources (e.g., straps, boards) plan and organize the loading sequence of freight and secure freight
- Recoup/repair damaged freight when necessary
- Understand and follow all safety policies and procedures to eliminate risk (e.g., chemical spills, Transportation of Dangerous Goods, Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System)
- Complete assigned tasks by following all policies and procedures (e.g., yard check)
- Assist customers with freight and freight documentation as needed
- Perform general housekeeping indoors and outdoors (e.g., maintaining cleanliness of facility, trailers)
- Assist with mentoring of new hires (e.g., freight handlers)
- Comply with all applicable laws/regulations, as well as company policies/procedures
- Perform other duties as required
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required
- High school diploma or GED equivalent
- Prior experience in warehousing, freight handling, forklift operation and/or cross dock
- Must possess or be able to obtain a forklift certificate within probationary period
- Ability to lift/carry hand freight of varying weights (e.g., lift dock plates weighing approximately 100 pounds, open trailer doors requiring approximately 75 pounds of lift force)
- Ability to bend, twist, squat, push/pull freight throughout shift
- Able to perform basic math, with or without a calculator
- Able to work alone or as a team member
- Able to follow instructions and complete required education (in person and computer)
- Strong problem-solving skills with strict attention to detail
- Basic computer skills and ability/willingness to learn new applications, software, systems, and equipment as required
- Good verbal, reading and written communication skills
- Bilingual (English/French), preferred; Quebec, required
Working Conditions
- Hours may vary due to operational need
- Must be able to hear at a level which would allow recognition of safety devices such as horns, backup signals and machinery in the potentially congested work environment of a loading dock, trailer and the yard
- Dock environment; exposure to varied weather conditions, exhaust, fumes, dust, noise
- Frequent contact with service centre personnel; fast-paced; deadline oriented
