Job summary

A municipal organization is seeking a Fleet Technician for the maintenance, repair, and inspection of City-owned vehicles. You will diagnose issues, complete repairs, and ensure that all equipment is safe and operational. The ideal candidate will need relevant certifications and experience in automotive repair. This role requires strong customer service skills and the ability to work independently.

Qualifications

  • 3–5 years of recent automotive repair experience, including engine diagnostics.
  • Familiarity with Ontario Traffic Manual (Book 7 preferred).
  • Experience working flexible hours, including shifts, overtime, and winter control.

Responsibilities

  • Repair and maintain a variety of City-owned vehicles and equipment.
  • Diagnose issues, perform road tests, and conduct safety checks.
  • Install, remove, repair, and maintain vehicle attachments.
  • Pick up and deliver vehicles as needed.

Job description

About the RoleAs a Fleet Technician, you will perform skilled tasks in the maintenance, repair, and inspection of City-owned vehicles and mechanical equipment. This includes diagnosing issues, completing repairs, and ensuring all equipment is safe and operational to support municipal services.

What You’ll Be Doing
  • Repair and maintain a variety of City-owned vehicles and equipment (e.g., trucks, loaders, tractors, sweepers, firefighting vehicles, ice resurfacers, park maintenance equipment).
  • Diagnose issues, perform road tests, and conduct safety checks on vehicles and equipment.
  • Install, remove, repair, and maintain vehicle attachments (e.g., snow plows, sanders, ice resurfacers, snow blowers, sweepers).
  • Perform mechanical tasks such as modifying water valves, repairing tools, welding, and fabricating components.
  • Pick up and deliver vehicles as needed.
  • Maintain a clean and organized shop environment.
  • Ensure equipment is safe to operate and properly stored; maintain cleanliness of vehicles and work areas.
  • Provide excellent customer service by responding to the needs of staff and other internal customers.
  • Accurately complete required documentation (e.g., daily performance logs, timesheets, accident reports).
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
What’s Required:
Education and Experience
  • Ontario Certificate of Qualification: Truck and Coach Technician (310T).
  • Ontario Certificate of Qualification: Automotive Service Technician (310S).
  • Valid Class “DZ” driver’s licence.
  • Standard First Aid / CPR C certification (WSIB recognized).
  • ODP (Ozone Depletion Protection) certification (preferred).
  • Drive Clean certification (preferred).
  • Propane, Natural Gas, and Hydraulic certifications (preferred).
  • 3–5 years of recent automotive repair experience, including engine diagnostics.
  • Training in Occupational Health and Safety (e.g., PPE, fall arrest, trench safety).
  • Familiarity with Ontario Traffic Manual (Book 7 preferred); able to set up safe traffic control in work zones.
  • Experience working flexible hours, including shifts, overtime, and winter control.
Skills:
  • Ability to meet physical demands of the role (as per PDA).
  • Strong time management and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Basic computer skills; Microsoft Office experience is an asset.
  • Must supply own tools (metric and SAE).
