The Planning, Budget & Finance Office provides strategic and operational advice on the financial and budget management of the Faculty, as well as internal institutional and Faculty research data and business support services to all of the Faculty’s units. The Office models, plans, and implements the Faculty’s operating budget and provides Faculty-wide support and advice on the management of research, restricted and trust funds; financial analyses and forecasting; strategic planning and budget analysis; policy compliance and develops and delivers finance and business training seminars for A&S academic administrators and administrative staff.

Your opportunity

Under the general direction of the Senior Financial Officer, Research and Restricted Accounts, the incumbent is responsible for the comprehensive financial administration of restricted trust accounts in the Dean’s Office. This includes ongoing monitoring, accurate recording, timely reconciliation, and financial analysis to ensure the integrity and proper stewardship of restricted funds; ensuring that expenditures and financial activities comply with donor intentions, and the specific terms outlined in funding and gift agreements. The incumbent will collaborate closely with academic departments and units across the Faculty of Arts & Science, providing guidance, support, and financial expertise to facilitate the effective use of funds.

The incumbent in this position will utilize strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills, along with advanced knowledge of accounting principles, financial systems and compliance frameworks.

Through these responsibilities, the incumbent contributes to maintaining accountability, fostering strong relationships with stakeholders, and supporting the strategic priorities of the Faculty.

Your responsibilities will include
  • Applying the University Guide to Financial Management and other applicable policies, agency and regulatory requirements
  • Monitoring, recording, reconciling and/or reporting on trust accounts
  • Monitoring, recording, reconciling and/or reporting on funding accounts for grants and contracts
  • Verifying that supporting documentation is attached to financial records before processing in FIS
  • Analyzing information and making recommendations to inform budgetary decision making
  • Analyzing processes and recommending changes based on understanding financial priorities
  • Identifying and analyzing data anomalies and discrepancies and taking necessary actions to correct errors
  • Generating standard financial reports and preparing financial summary reports
  • Providing advice and data to support the development of business cases and analytics for departmental and research initiatives
  • Serving as a resource to others by providing (non-supervisory) job-related guidance
Essential Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Commerce, Business Administration, Accounting, or a related discipline or an acceptable combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum three (3) years of related experience with financial accounting in a post-secondary education or research-intensive institution.
  • Highly knowledgeable in the University’s Financial Information System (FIS), Human Resources Information System (HRIS), and My Research Online, or similar financial systems.
  • Demonstrated hands‑on experience with large enterprise systems such as SAP (e.g., AMS – RIS, HRIS, FIS) and MROL.
  • Experience applying rules and procedures of the University of Toronto's Guide to Financial Management and the Ontario Broader Public Sector (BPS) Procurement Directive.
  • Experience applying rules and procedures of granting agencies.
  • Demonstrated experience working with and excellent knowledge of the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Access), including complex spreadsheet development and data analysis.
  • Familiarity with Power BI for data visualization and reporting.
  • Excellent understanding of collective agreements and institutional financial policies.
  • Ability to work with complex and/or technical information (e.g. financial statements).
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills.
Assets (Nonessential)
  • Financial experience with the Faculty of Arts and Science.
  • Proficiency in data analytics tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau).
  • Experience with internal audit processes.
  • Understanding of procurement policies.
