Position Summary

The Accounting & Compliance Supervisor is responsible for all aspects of the organization’s reporting requirements. This includes preparing monthly and year‑end journal entries and bank reconciliation, performing account reconciliation and analysis, researching variances and identifying trends. The role also leads the accounting support team in developing, implementing, and maintaining strong internal financial controls and procedures. Additionally, the supervisor assists the Senior Accountant during month‑end and year‑end activities and supports the accounting team with transactional duties. Duties are often performed with minimal supervision, requiring strong workflow organization to meet deadlines. This position reports to the Director of Finance.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Accounting and Finance
  • Minimum of 1 year of related accounting experience in a nonprofit organization, with a track record of managing, preparing, and analyzing various types of funds, grants, projects, and donations (restricted and unrestricted)
  • Experience supporting the full financial portfolio of programs, departments, and contracts; strong understanding of nonprofit fund accounting, donor reporting requirements, and compliance with government and private funding guidelines
  • Familiarity with audit preparation, budget monitoring, and financial reporting to multiple stakeholders is preferred
  • High proficiency in Dynamics 365 Business Central and Sage 300, and advanced Excel skills
  • Ability to understand, communicate, and support the mission and principles of Housing First and Harm Reduction model
  • Equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered
  • Proficiency in Microsoft 365, Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and video conferencing platforms
Key Responsibilities

Accounting and Finance

  • Manage the full cycle of accounts payable and receivable, monitor inquiries through accounting mailbox and ticketing system, and ensure accurate and efficient financial operations
  • Perform full cycle accounting functions including posting to the general ledger, completing trial balances, preparing and reviewing journal entries, reconciling and balancing data, and preparing draft financial statements for review by the Director of Finance
  • Manage and review peer pay process, petty cash, staff expense reimbursements, and advances
  • Assist the Senior Accountant with audit preparation, respond to auditors, investigate variances, and meet audit deadlines
  • Act as first point of contact in Finance for staff, external customers, and vendors regarding billings, vendor invoices, and staff reimbursements
  • Lead role in identifying, developing, implementing, and maintaining strong internal financial controls and procedures

Reporting and Budgeting

  • Prepare reports, summaries, and analyses such as period‑end balance sheets, income statements, general ledgers, funder reports, year‑end working papers, variance analyses, draft budgets, and ledger account reconciliations
  • Analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial position summaries and performance reports for all funders, contracts covering the full portfolio of programs, projects, and grants
  • Research and analyze differences between current and prior year financial results and budgeted amounts
  • Responsible for statutory reporting, payments on GST, WSBC, etc.
  • Develop work procedures with Senior Accountant, ensure departmental standards, accurate transactions, and timely deadlines; provide input on operational requirements to Director of Finance
  • Record and manage all incoming donations, including restricted and unrestricted funds and grants; prepare quarterly donation reports and reconciliations
  • Assist with developing and implementing ongoing IT process improvements in Finance

Leadership

  • Supervise accounting support team members and conduct annual performance reviews and coaching
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
