Role Summary

We are seeking a motivated and dedicated Christian family physician to join the health clinic within our emergency shelter system. The clinic is currently staffed with a medical director, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, primary care paramedics, emergency response technicians, health care aids, social workers, and administrative staff. The clinic currently focuses on providing episodic and gap care for patients without attachment to a primary care provider. Your role would include support for the clinics to enhance their capacity for diagnosis and management of these patients. A new program is also being developed to provide more intensive care for patients referred from Emergency Departments who do not meet criteria for hospital admission, but who require more care than can be provided for patients with unstable housing. As a family physician/general practitioner, you will play a crucial role in providing high-quality patient care and promoting overall wellness for the vulnerably housed community. For patients transferred from Emergency Departments who require a longer length of stay with medical oversight, you will complete admission assessments, monitor the progress of care and determine when the need for this level of care has been met (i.e. Admission, Progress and Discharge). In both the clinic and short term stay unit, you would support accurate diagnosis, appropriate treatment and patient education on health-related matters.

Specific Responsibilities
  • Care Consultation
  • Medical Rounds
  • Diagnosing and treating illnesses
  • Performing medical procedures
  • Ordering and interpreting tests
  • Prescribing medications
  • Advocating for client wellness
  • Educating patients on preventative care and disease management
  • Supporting clients in mental health and addictions recovery
  • Complying with PIPA, privacy, confidentiality, and FOIP
  • Advising on HM Policies and Procedures
  • Participating in interdisciplinary and interagency collaboration
  • Participating in quality improvement initiatives within the clinic
  • Providing mentorship and preceptorship to colleagues, new staff, and students
Required Qualifications
  • Active registration in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA).
  • Active First Aid certification (preferably BLS-HCP).
  • Active professional liability protection insurance.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Self-motivation, ability to work well without supervision and capable of working collaboratively with the entire health care team.
  • Active involvement in a recognized professional development program (e.g. Canadian College of Family Practice).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with vulnerable populations, especially those experiencing homelessness.
  • Proficiency in computer skills and applications including Microsoft Office and EMR systems.
  • Strong understanding of Culturally Informed Care and Trauma Informed Care.
