Overview

The Families First Home Visitor works with families using a strength-based and solution-focused approach to promote positive parent-child relationships, support healthy childhood growth and development, enhance parenting skills, promote safety and well-being, and connect families with their community. The Families First Home Visitor reports to the regional Public Health/Community Team manager and works with Public Health Nurses who provide supervision and guidance in day-to-day operations.

Families First is a community-based resource designed to promote healthy growth and development of children by supporting families in their homes, during pregnancy and the first five years of a child’s life, for a period of up to three years. The Home Visitor collaborates with an inter-disciplinary team and initiates and maintains regular, family-centered home visits. The role uses an evidence-informed curriculum and shares activities that support positive parent-child interactions. The Home Visitor, with guidance from Public Health Nurses, helps families explore goals related to culture and values and implements home visiting practices according to the provincial Families First Program guidelines. This position works in a manner consistent with the mission, vision, values, and policies of the Regional Health Authority.

Responsibilities
  • Initiate and maintain regular family-centered home visits as part of an inter-disciplinary team.
  • Utilize an evidence-informed curriculum and share activities that support positive parent-child interactions.
  • Support families to explore goals related to culture, values, and family well-being.
  • Implement home visiting practices according to established Families First provincial guidelines.
  • Collaborate with Public Health Nurses for supervision and guidance in day-to-day operations.
Experience
  • Minimum one (1) year of experience working with families with young children (0–5 years) or prenatal families on parenting-related areas within the last five years required.
Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)
  • High School Diploma or equivalent; or GED Manitoba Standards required.
  • Certification as a Community Support Worker, Social Services Worker, Family Support Worker, Early Childhood Educator, or other relevant post-secondary education in a related field is an asset.
  • Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.
  • Successful candidate is required to complete Families First provincial orientation and training as scheduled.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and related IT applications; ability to use Internet resources and technical equipment.
  • Fluency in English (verbal, reading, written). Proficiency in both official languages is essential for designated bilingual positions.
Physical Requirements
  • Valid Manitoba Class 5 driver’s license, an all-purpose insured reliable vehicle, and liability insurance of at least $1,000,000.
  • Physically capable of providing service in various community settings and weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment up to 20 lbs (9 kg).
  • Ability to climb stairs, crouch, kneel/sit on the floor during home visits and activities.
  • Expected travel throughout the region/province for training, program needs, or provision of services.
  • Designated Northern positions may require travel to remote communities and overnight accommodations.
  • Evening and weekend work may be required to meet client needs.

Security and Eligibility: This position requires a current satisfactory Criminal Records Check (including Vulnerable Sector), Child Abuse Registry Check, and Adult Abuse Registry Check as conditions of employment. The candidate will be responsible for any service charges incurred. A security check is current if obtained within six months prior to start date.
