Job description

Headquartered in Ottawa, the ByWard Market District Authority (BMDA) is a municipal services corporation established by the City of Ottawa to steward the historical and vibrant ByWard Market District and is responsible for managing the ByWard and the Parkdale Public Markets. The BMDA’s mandate centres on elevating the streetscape and public realm beyond standard municipal service levels, enriching the resident and visitor experience, and fostering cultural, economic and social vitality across these iconic public market spaces.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director is the senior official of the ByWard Market District Authority, responsible for overseeing the administration, strategic direction, and day-to-day operations of the organization. This role ensures the effective implementation of programs, stakeholder engagement strategies, and financial stewardship aligned with BMDA’s mission. The Executive Director serves as the principal advisor to the Board and leads a dedicated team in managing the Market’s renewal, preparing for its 200th anniversary, and maintaining strong relationships with stakeholders, government partners, and the broader community.

As the ideal candidate, you are a seasoned executive with strong leadership and communication skills, capable of navigating complex stakeholder environments, operational challenges and experience in a municipal government environment. You bring a deep understanding of urban planning, commercial or tourism management, and have a passion for community revitalization. Skilled in working with boards, government partners, and diverse community groups, you are adept at building consensus and driving strategic initiatives. With solid financial acumen and operational expertise, you are well‑positioned to lead the ByWard Market District Authority through its day‑to‑day operations and into a transformative period, including the renewal of the Market and its 200th anniversary celebrations. Fluency in both English and French is a strong asset to effectively represent the organization and engage with its broad stakeholder base.
