Qualifications

  • 4-8 years of experience in a relevant field, preferably in oil sands.
  • Valid Class 5 driver's license with clean abstract.
  • Experience with ATV and/or watercraft is an asset.

  • Implement Surface Water Management Plan at the Albian Oil Sands site.

Canadian Natural has an exciting opportunity for a highly detail oriented and organized environmental professional to provide stewardship and regulatory guidance on surface water regulatory obligations. In this role, you will implement the Surface Water Management Plan for the Albian Oil Sands site by supporting operations and providing regulatory direction for activities such as river water intake restrictions and discharge limits.

You will use your strong communication skills to support and advise mine operations dewatering and mine projects construction on operational controls to maintain regulatory requirements. Initiative and flexibility are required as this role consists of approximately 60% office and 40% field work.

  • Job location: Fort McMurray, Alberta – Albian Oil Sands site
  • Shift schedule:4 x 3, 10-hour shifts (Monday - Thursday)

Key Accountabilities
  • Interpret water quality data utilizing a sound understanding of statistics, biological and hydrogeochemical processes
  • Collect surface water samples in safe and cost-efficient manner; ensuring samples are stored, analyzed and reported to maintain regulatory compliance
  • Utilize EQuIS database for surface water field and analytical data
  • Report results internally and externally to stakeholders and regulators including weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual water quantity and quality related reports
  • Represent Canadian Natural at various internal and external water committees
  • Organize sample logistics including bottle preparation and calibration of field equipment, and chain of custody preparation
  • Maintain accurate records ensuring records are collected, checked, and stored
  • Provide support and backup for environment team members (groundwater, inspections, wildlife, reclamation field work)
  • Participate in the 24-hr Environment On-Call and Emergency Operation Centre (EOC) to support incidents
  • Supervise students assisting with field work, as well as work collaboratively with environmental team members
What You Bring to the Role
  • Typically, 4-8 years of experience with a degree in Environmental Science, Earth Sciences, Biology, Chemistry or Hydrology, or a related technical diploma with extensive work experience, preferably in oil sands
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license with clean drivers abstract and previous ATV and/or watercraft experience considered an asset
  • Strong Excel skills in relation to statistics and analytics
  • Working knowledge of EQuIS is considered an asset
