Director of US Taxation (125-155K)

Our client is North America’s largest energy provider, with over 5 million customers and 2,500 employees. As the demand for more energy continues to increase, exciting opportunities for career development and advancement emerge.

The Director of US Taxation will work out of the Toronto office, and oversee US tax functions for various subsidiaries. The incumbent will work in a variety of functions primarily involved in tax planning, consulting, acquisitions, research, and compliance.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide ongoing US tax advice and guidance on operational, financial, and acquisition transactions to minimize tax exposure while maximizing tax and economic benefits.
  • Assist in developing and implementing appropriate tax strategies and planning initiatives to deliver significant tax savings.
  • Supervise and train tax staff and direct the US tax compliance activities to meet all return filing and tax payment due dates as mandated by the various governmental entities.
  • Manage mid-year and full-year US tax expense provisions for financial reporting purposes.
  • Manage all US tax examinations by external auditors and resolve the tax issues in the most cost-effective manner. Liaise with domestic and overseas accountants, auditors, tax authorities, and outside advisors.
  • Coordinate merger and acquisition activities from a US tax perspective, including tax and financing structures, tax due diligence, tax inputs on valuation models, and purchase and sale agreements.
  • Assist in reviewing transfer‑pricing activities and developing supportable methodologies and documentation on various cross‑border transactions.
  • Maintain updated knowledge of US tax rules, regulations, standards and related matters of interest to the organization to ensure compliance. Advise management of any major impacts and obtain support and cooperation of tax related issues.
  • Be involved with industry groups to keep abreast of tax developments and concerns.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with other departments and business units.
Ideal Traits/Qualifications
  • More than ten years of US tax planning, consulting, compliance, and international tax experience for multinational corporations.
  • In‑depth knowledge of U.S. tax laws, regulations and treaties.
  • Professional Accounting Designation (CPA/CA).
  • Sound business and finance knowledge and judgment.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to effectively interact with executives, all levels of management, peers, external auditors, consultants and to participate in operational teams to develop strategies.
  • Five or more years in a supervisory/managerial capacity to gain essential management skills to direct a professional work group/team.
  • Diligent, self‑motivated and deadline driven.
  • Some travel may be required.
